South America, another revisit...
Between mid October '18 and end February '19 I'll be back in my favourite part of the riding world. Between Buenos Aires and Colombia. November will be in Peru and Bolivia and following the Dakar race in January. The rest of the time is flexible, but seeking out favourite haunts and trails from previous trips as well as new things that might float my canoe.
On a red and white Honda thumper with a loud pipe :innocent: Give me a wave? Drink a cerveza? If you're on the same road, ride a bit together? See my signature for previous trip reports. |
Keep an eye out for a Globebusters tour being lead by the irrepressible Ms Coates.

That sounds like...
an ideal opportunity to test out your garmins' Avoidance option! ;)

Leaving São Paulo early January to follow the Dakar
Hey Chris!
My idea is to leave São Paulo in early January and head to Peru to follow the Dakar. I might go with 2 English lady riders who will rent my bikes - will decide in the next few days. So I will ride the XCo if going alone or a KLX 250 if they rent my BMWs! They will want to see Atacama and Uyuni first and might have a time limit, so not sure about the feasible route now... I really want to return to Uyuni and see Macchu Picchu and the Cordillera Blanca - and of course follow the Dakar at some stage! |

Good to hear from you. It'd be great to catch up again. Let's stay in touch re. our respective plans. You have my FB details, so via Messenger would probably be best. Probably won't make it to São Paulo on this trip. A Brazilian visit is likely to only include Foz do Iguassu and possibly the Pantanal or via Puerto Maldonaldo in Peru. However as it'll be the rainy season, less likely :rain: Best regards! |
Indeed Chris!
Safe travels |
Hey
I’m on the TAT atm and will be heading south in a week or two, should be in South America at the same time as you. Let’s keep in touch! |

Depends on how quickly you travel as to whether we meet up :-) I strongly recommend the Lagunas route southwards from the Salar de Uyuni. Also don't miss the northern part of the Ruta 40 in NW Argentina north of Salta. Well worth a visit. Still fun gravel and good scenery. South of Cafayate to Rio Gallegos in Patagonia is now all paviemento :-( |
Thanks Chris and Cholo for the Infos on routes to take. Some were on our itinerary already.
We´ll Keep our eyes open for you Chris. If you see we are close (look on ADV) give us a shout. See you down the road. Thomas |

Any help or advice more than welcome!
Hi everyone! Ok, I must be mad...passed my bike test 3 weeks ago in the UK. Am now in Medellín, Colombia, about to buy a Honda 300. I have no experience of riding a bike, apart from my test. I’ll be heading south, where I hope to end up in Brazil. Anyone out there with advice, who can meet me en route to help me navigate! I have no idea what on earth im doing!! Arghh! Thank you, in advance!

After a work related loop of southern Peru and western Bolivia I'm (young?), free and single again :scooter:
Currently in Arequipa and likely heading up towards Lago Titicaca and then generally following Highway 3 northwards, or maybe I'll take another quick visit into western Bolivia? Must find that map :helpsmilie: and make a plan! Anyone riding a bike in this part of the world at the moment? |
Colombia to Peru, maybe
Hi Chris:
Couple of us kind of WTFOT expedition wanderers are conjuring a flight into Bogota/Cali/Medellin, buying for cash a couple of new small motorbikes, going down to Peru (unsupported, no chase van, guides, GPS, smart phones), for a quick peek at Dakar Rally, and then ?. This is my fourth ride down that route, so not making reservations. The "plan" is to divest ourselves of the "throw away" motorcycles (as in donate, leave at airport with keys in the ignition, sell or sell for parts) at the end of January, wherever we are. The last time I was on that route I was with a "scared bunny traveller" who was sure he would be kidnapped and used as a sex toy in the jungles of Colombia, so wanted to get out of Colombia ASAP...locking himself in his room from 7:00 PM to 8:00AM many nights (he'd read a book about the terror of traveling in Colombia). This time I'll go a little slower. ADVENTURE RIDING BUNNY article can be found here for free: www.greataroundtheworldmotorcycleadventurerally.co m Maybe meet you again (Tanzania, USA, and Thailand in years past). Contact me off the forum if going as far north as Ecuador or Colombia. Regards, "Dr. G" Chief of the World Adventure Affairs Desk, CITY BIKE, researching adventurous affairs around the globe |
Gregoir,
I recall your merry tale of said el capitano jog-on-face and his fear of all things beyond the land of the corn fed orange short fingered whopper. .. doh I'll be chasing the Dakar race in January too and then high tailing it to Colombia. Twix then and now I'll seek out twisty roads by day and mojitos by night in Peru and Bolivia. Indeed, let's stay in touch off this forum. |

On the off chance that someone reads this message who is actually riding/ driving in Peru at the moment and following the Dakar race that's starting soon: I'll be there. Keep an eye out for my bike :D Drink a beer?

Hi Chris , I'm in Lima working with customs after suspending Tip 8 months ago. Hopefully the last long bus ride miraflores to callao, where the office is. Plan on going north after the Dakar rally, not sure how you can recognize me without my bike. Being German , I like beer and wouldn't mind riding with someone else.

Dakar, toot toot! Disrespecting speed limits, riding off road, waking pumas. Disgraceful... :innocent:
