SoCal to Patagonia Spring 2015

I am setting off from San Diego on 12th April 2015 for a 3 month ride down into Argentina / Patagonia. My bike is a Honda XR440 with hard luggage.

Anyone out there that may be setting out around then too?

Austin, Texas -> BA, Argentina starting Feb/March 2015

Hi Ogrica,

I'm starting trip from Austin, Texas to BA around mid to late Feb. Giving myself 5/6 months and will be taking my time through CA so we may cross paths at some stage and I'd be happy to join you for a leg.

Will be on a KLR650 hopefully. Departure date can't come fast enough!

Cheers,
Brendan

In South America below the Equator you will need studs on your tires as you will be in their winter season all the way to Ushuaia.......covered Ushuaia in January ( their fall ) temps at night -1

If you continue following travelers here and on ADV Rider I'm sure you'll run into riders along the way. There are several "Choke points" all along the Gringo trail where riders congregate or pass by for several reasons.

Baja is full of riders but only a few you meet will be planning to go "all the way" South. Most are Gringo day trippers down for a week or so. But SOME will be packed heavy for the long haul.

La Paz, Baja Sur is popular and just about everyone takes the Ferry over to Mainland Mexico from there. A good place to run into other riders.

Copper Canyon is another popular destination, many pass through there on their way South. Look around Creel or Batopilas, always a few bikes in town.

The Beaches and Mexican highlands are also good for finding other travelers.
Puerto Vallarta, Puerto Escondido, Guanajuato, San Miguel de Allende and many other historical towns attract travelers.

San Cristobal near Guat border another magnet spot.

Tikal ruins and Antigua, Guat. and of course many line up for the Ferry or the Steel Rat to cross from Panama over to Colombia. Follow the forums, see who is nearby on the road with a similar schedule. DOZENS out there at any given time.

PPatrick,
Where are you leaving from and when? There are 3 of us possibly more leaving in October some time. I'm coordinating with others who will be shipping bikes there that we may be able to meet up with.

There is another thread here about going south at the wrong time of the year. Getting to patagonia in June and july isn't recommended unless you like bitter cold and gale-force winds. Since those conditions can occur in the middle of summer (December to February), you can be sure the middle of winter will be worse. Adding to the experience is that the high Andes and high plains of Peru, Bolivia and Chile will also be snowed under or very cold and windy.

Made it to Equador - anyone want to meet up?

Hi guys,

Thanks for all the replies. I won't attempt Patagonia this trip as it's too far and I need to be in Santiago or Buenos Aires mid July anyway.

So I am crossing into Equador from amazing Colombia in a few days and wondered of anyone will be there too.

Let me know. It would be nice to ride with someone after 6 weeks soloing.

Hey Ogrica,

I'm currently in Quito awaiting parts to fix my bike, I'll be done either this Saturday or next Tuesday, depending on when my parts arrive. Shoot me an email, at the worst we can go for a beer
