Ruta 40 Patagonia, heading south. Anyone heading north

I don't even know if this is feasible, but me and a friend want to drive from Santiago to Punta Arenas, mainly through Argentina (from Mendoza to Calafate and then on back to Chile). We need to rent a car, but the one-way fee is really expensive. So we thought we may share the rental with someone heading the other way round, towards Santiago. But I honestly don't know if this is the best plan, or even if this is a prudent thing to do.

Any advice or anyone interested?
