I'm Hugues, 22, software engineer!
I'm in love with riding and actually planning a RTW trip !

Most of the work is done (itinerary, schedule, required visas...) But after speaking with a friend of mine who's living in Brasil for 20 years, he told me I was absolutely mad to attempt such an adventure alone.

By the way he's not totally wrong and I guess it would be more fun to ride with 1 or 2 others !

Hi Hugues - here's a suggestion - first of all, don't listen to anyone who perceives a solo RTW trip is inherently dangerous, plenty of people have done it before you and lived to tell the tale ;o)

However, I agree there is often a benefit in travelling with a companion, and all the joy of shared experience which you don't get alone.

My suggestion would be rather than look for someone/s to commit to a whole RTW trip (a huge undertaking for most people) - consider breaking the itineary down into more defined date/distance sections and asking people to join you for specific legs of the trip - be that someone with local knowledge of the country (who can help you see things you might otherwise miss), or someone also keep to explore a certain part of the world, but cannot commit to the whole end-to-end/year-long trip in it's entirety?

I think that would make an interesting story/addition to your trip in itself - hope that is something to consider...

Actually I totally agree with you ! On the other side, I've been advised by someone who lives in south America for 20 years and I trust his experience there so I must be careful ! The plan is to have fun and come back home, not getting murdered on a lost road in Bolivia ;)

You're right, I'll make proposals for multiple parts instead of full trip !

Hah! So while I can't speak specifically to Bolivia, I haven't been in a single country where locals haven't warned me about travelling on a motorbike solo. I've been told that bandits would rob me in Sumatra, that separatist maoists rebels would murder me in East India, that bears would eat me in Georgia, and that poachers would accidentally shoot me in Bulgaria. They always mean very well but sometimes people can be a bit too paranoid when they know you're out there alone on a bike.

Don't be affraid of South America I have done all countries of South America, last year with a 125cc motorbike, camping everywhere, and I even entered illegal in Venezuela with all the problems that is having the country! The people in South America are perfect and you are never alone and the motorcycle people give ou everything you need! It's totally safe!

hi,
i rode your blog, i want to advertise you that the afghanistan/pakistan border is closed for foreigner, to cross china you need a guide and it's about 100 dollars a day , for some contries like india pakistan népal you need a carnet de passage en douane 3500 euros for deposit .
i'm french from Lyon ! i'm preparing a rtw starting in 2 or 3 years !
