Excuse Me For Butting In...

Hi, I did the trip last year from Veracruz, Mexico, to Ushuaia. Spanish is an enormous help, even a smattering, particularly at frontiers. Guidebooks tend to warn of bad experiences with cops, Customs and Immigration. The one holdup I suffered was at the Honduras frontier close by Copan. The head of Customs insisted I drink beer with him in his office and watch the Mexico/France match (World Cup). Courtesy and humour get you further than cash. The most valuable phrase is Esculpame. Excuse me... When chosing a bike, think SPARE PARTS! Hopefully you won't need them. However, the bigger the bike the more difficult to locate spares. A big bike also creates a wealth barrier between you and the country folk. I ride a 125 Honda but would prefer a 250 - aged 74, I couldn't handle anything heavier.
The Panamericano is a truck fest.
I hate trucks.
I am on my way north now to NY - though have been in Rio Grande (Tierra del Fuego) the past month waiting for a broken ankle to heal. I got run down from the rear by three trucks. OK, so two were on the prime mover's trailer - it counts as three! Message me if I can be of help. Most information is on my BLOG at home
Go for it, good luck and have fun,

:oops2: simon

Walkabout 3 Sep 2007 23:29

Hey Simon, you should do your next trip driving the biggest, meanest truck you can get your hands on and run all the other trucks off the road, especially when there is ice on the highway.

Good luck and good travelling,

Sorry guys :offtopic: :offtopic: but I could not resist Simons post, so blame him!

omhughes 4 Sep 2007 17:04

So any takers? on the trip?

Great to hear from so many like minded folks out there...
I'm busy planning the trip and just go quoted 950 stertling to ship the bike over to Toronto1! :-( OUch!!!.... anyone any ideas whose the best to do this sort of thing?

Us - Tdf 2008

Hi Guys,

Have you come any closer to your plans yet? I am planning to head south from Phoenix around a spring 2008. I will be in Phoenix end of Jan to buy my bike & start to kit it out & do a few runs around AZ, CA & CO before heading south. I plan to ride a KLR650 or a 650 Dakar depending on the best offers I can get when in Phoenix once I am there.

I am from the UK & am on a sabbatical for a few years. The basic plan is to do Central America from March - June with a few weeks to learn Spanish & Some diving thrown in somewhere on the Caribbean coast. Then spend the next 6 months leisurely riding down to TDF.

Let me know if you feel that we can hook up for any part of our planned adventures or share valuable information.

Cheers Mojo.

Sime66 18 Jan 2008 14:28

I'm doing TDF - Vancouver starting in September so we may meet in the middle. I've just been quoted 650 GBP to ship to Buenos Aires, by Luna shipping (from London) so they might be worth a shout...

I live in Toronto, Ontario and am leaving from here on June 27th and riding to Alaska and from there down to Vancouver, British Columbia.

So far I'm on my own but would welcome company for part or all the way.

Read your recent post with interest as we made that trek from Toronto to Ushuaia via Alaska back in 2003-2004. It was the journey of a lifetime! It was by SUV though, not bike. Safe travels!

jonnymac 9 Feb 2008 09:54

I was also planning on doing the Pan America, But not sure if I can do it this year :( I am in Turkey at the moment left Ireland 20th Jan. Ferry to France and through France to Italy ferry Greece and on to Turkey, Travelling Solo it was interesting, I will be headin back in a few weeks, be home March. How far have u gone with planning ?? I have plans in Sept to do route 66 I have it booked and payed for so cant change, :(
Might have a look at maybe leavin bike somewhere enroute and flying to Chicago or maybe ride there and meet up with my buddies, and continue on after we get back on the West Coast again,
I will give it some serious thought, What sort of a budget have u for the trip?
Im from Cork maybe we can get together for a beer or 3 when I get back :thumbup1:

Hi , Stop in calgary and say hi.I left my bike in buenas aires march1, going bacvk oct 18 ,maybe we will meet in argentina or chile.

SgtMarty 21 Apr 2008 06:08

I will be headed for Alaska from Colorado in the first week of June, taking 6 weeks for the round trip on a KLR.

A buddy and I will then leave Colorado at the end of September, and hope to be in Ushuaia before year's end.

We might cross paths or ride for a while in S America. We were planning on riding south from Bogota through Ecuador and Chile as far south as possible before turning into Argentina and heading for Ushuaia.

pecha72 21 Apr 2008 06:41

A travel agency in Finland, Peterpanmaailma, is doing a group-tour from Anchorage to Ushuaia, starting 1st September, ending 10th November... and they claim they have over 10 riders coming, even though the trip costs in the region of 20.000 euros (which includes a bike, KLR650 or similar). So I guess you might meet a bunch of crazy Finns on the road then.

going east ?

Hi Omhughes

I think we got a very similar date planing, if you want details you can write me at beaumontfrancois@hotmail.com

Do you plan to go east from toronto ? If you want to visit Quebec city(8h driving from toronto) you are welcome to stay a few days if you want, I own a small confortable sugar shack (20 minute from the city), I can give you few hints and opinions about the "Canada-usa " part of the trip (I've done it 2 years ago)

If your interested to visit Quebec there is lot of opportunities to assist to large outdoors shows, almost absolutely free (gouvernement give us 200 million to do the world biggest party this year), There a lot of big name; Le cirque du soleil , Celine Dion(the 2 biggest ticket seller in Las vegas for the last ten years) Linkin Park, Yes ,Sum 41, Fergie Cold Play I think....etc to be sure
check the calendar of those site.

Ushuaia by Christmas

Hi Folks

Happy to have found this thread. Seems like a bunch of us might be bumping into each other on the way south this fall.

We are in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. The plan is for us (a couple riding 2-up on a BMW R12GSA) to leave here September 13. We will be stopping in Montreal for a day or two to visit family and do the same in Toronto. We will then turn south towards Mexico and Latin America.

Our agenda is relax. We have areas we wish to visit but our timeline is open. This allows us the flexibility to extend our visit to places we enjoy. Our only goal (ok, it's mine, not hers) is to be in Ushuaia for Christmas. It would be cool if we could all meet there.

Oisin why are you shipping your bike to Toronto? Especially if you will be going to Nova Scotia. You'd be doubling back if you intend to go to Alaska after Nova Scotia. The distances between cities in Canada can be vast. Toronto - Halifax is 1860 km.

If you are shipping your moto by boat, Halifax, NS is a major shipping port.

Also, if you ride by Fredericton, you are welcome to drop in. We are about 350km from Halifax on the route to Toronto.

Robert

After a year and a half delay I am finally leaving the UK 30th August for Anchorage and plan to get into Mexico by October to ride down to TDF. Flight is booked and just trying to sort out buying a bike in Anchorage.

It would be great to meet up with anyone else on the road on the way south as some company would be nice.

Ciao,
Annette

Your timing looks similar to my plans, I should be starting in Alaska in August and aiming to get to TDF by late December.

Cheers,

I'm starting in July (2nd week or so) from Houston, Texas and will be spending xmas at tierra del fuego. I'm solo so far.

I'm on an F650GS. I can be stalked, erm followed by my blog that is in my sig.

It'd be great to meet up. Based on what your time frame could be, it may work out if we were to meet up in Guatemala. I'm going to speed through Meixco (because I live in TX, MX is easy to get to) and do some diving in the yucatan.. but will spend a few weeks in Xela, Guatemala to study spanish.

It'd be great to ride with someone else!
