Horizons Unlimited - The HUBB - Norway - Lofoten

Hi Frank - hope you have enjoyed your tour in Norway so far.

Kystriksveien - the coastal highway - R17 is a nice and scenic road. But there are many ferry crossings....

When you come to Lofoten from Bodø by ferry - which is the most logical way with continuing from R17 - you will first land on Moskenes/Moskenesøya.
On that island there are lots of "Rorbuer" = fishermans cabins that you can rent. Some of these cabins are actual fishermans cabins but most of them are not. But I still can recommend a stay in one of those. Rorbuer for rent can be found many other places in Lofoten and other places - especially in northern Norway. On the Moskenes island you will not find a whole lot of natural wild caming areas - but there are of course possibilities.

On the Next island - driving northeast - Flakstad-island - there are a couple of oficial caming grounds one of them near the main town/village Ramberg, I think its called Skagen camping. There is also a nice one at Fredvang - just a few kilometers detour. Just follow the road signs. On Flakstad island there are many places to wild camp. Hard to suggest any place. There are a particularly scenic fishing village called Nusfjord - that is worth a look. A blacksmith at Sund with a nice museum of old boat engines - those really old ones, hot bulb engines I belive theyre called in english. There is also a glass and ceramic artist at Vikten. Just follow the road signs....

The next island is called Vestvågøy - and thats the place I actually come from. Its the biggest island in Lofoten and places to camp wildy are plentiful. I would like to suggest some of the places on the "outer"/wester side of the island. For example at Hauklandsand/Viksand and Uttakleiv that has got really nice beaches - although the temprature of the sea might not be to your satisfaction.....but really nice and many tourists do wild caming there.
There are also other places like Undstad (surfers paradise) - I belive there are an official caming site there now, and Eggum. A little further from Vestresand is also a particular scenic place. But if you want to watch the midnightsun - I think youre just too late.... ;-)
There is a real nice official camping site where you have the "B" on your map and a ok one where you have the "A" - thats on the inner side of the island but still very nice. You can also rent a "rorbu" - fishermans cabin - at many places around the island such as at Ballstad, Mortsund and Stamsund.
At Borg there is a Viking museum that supposedly are nice -I havent been there.
Vestvågøy is a island that big that you can drive both of the inner and outer side of it and also do additional detours as well. Many scenic places.
Then there is a small island called Gimsøy - which actually has a golf court for those who like that sport. You can do wild camping inm many nice sposts there. Just take a round on the island and pick your own!
Next island is called Austvågøy and has the biggst town in Lofoten - called Svolvær. There are are also a official camping site here as where you have the letter "F". Svolvær is a nice little town. Other places of interest are Henningsvær - maybe the most autentic fishermans village in Lofoten. Further from Svolvær you can also reach the outer side of the island which has got many nice spots for wild camping. An official camping spot are where you have your letter "H".
Further from that you can follow R E10 - to the Lofoten fastlandsforbindelse - road. A very scenic stretch with tunnels under the sea and bridges over the next and so on for an hour of driving. Detours from this can be made to reach Raftsundet - a very scenic fjord/strait. Wild camping can be done almost everywhere here.

And further - when you reach Gullesfjord - turn left - drive to Sortland and then to Andenes. Take the ferry from Andenes to Gryllefjord on the island of Senja. This is called the "whale route" as whales occasionally can be spotted during the ferry trip. From Gryllefjord - drive to the north end of the Senja island - a place called Botnhamn. Drive the outer route on Senja as it it is the most scenic and wild. From Botnhamn - take the ferry to Brensholmen on and island called Kvaløya. From there there is a short detour to Sommarøya (a very nice spot) - or just straight to Tromsø. Tromsø is the biggest town in northern Norway and has many sightseing spots.
Thats the wayto drive from Trondheim to tromsø without touching the main route of E6 - just back roads all the way!
