Myanmar - India to Thailand

Hi there - we're looking to cross Myanmar this autumn (late Aug, early Sep) is anyone interested in grouping up to share the adventure and costs of a tour? We're on a pair of KTM 690s but happy to travel with 2 and 4 (and more) wheelers.

Hi there,

You're going to be going to early for me but perhaps you could answer 1 or 2 questions for me.

What route are you taking exactly? through Bangladesh and Myanmar I assume? Have you had any trouble with visas of travel restrictions or anything of that kind? I was thinking of following the same route and would love some advice of any kind.

Thanks,

Kai.

Hi,
I'm interested in crossing Myanmar with my bike those dates. My problem is I need a relatively quick crossing. How long crossing were you thinking of?.
Thanks.
Angel.

Angel,

Hadn't got that far in the planning yet but ballpark 7-10 days maybe?

Hi,
Seven days would be perfect for me. I can't more days.
You'll tell me if posible.

Great, I'll let you know how we get on with the planning - can you drop us a message on Facebook - Muddlifecrisis?

Hello,
Do you go on with the plan of crossing Myanmar late August?

muddlifecrisis 29 May 2016 17:14

Hi Angel,

Sorry we've been having some issues with bikes and visas. Nearly a month stuck in Turkey waiting for Iran to give us a visa. We're looking at crossing Myanmar 14-26 October which is a bit later than we had originally planned and I suspect might be a bit too slow for your plan but let us know.

Regards,

Piers

Hey, I'm looking at doing a similar crossing early 2017 and have heard that the India -> Myanmar border is currently closed? Do you have any news on it?

Did you folks end up getting your Myanmar visas? I have not heard of anybody being allowed to make this crossing. Congratulations to you if you pulled it off.

Be aware guys - you will need a permit and guides to enter and cross Thailand now. New rules/laws from the 27th this week.

Just so you sont get stuck in Myanmar.

I've seen lots of news about permits for foreign vehicles but nothing about guides too. Do you have any sources?

The guys at Rideasia.net seems to be the ones best updated in this case.

Temp. Importing a Foriegn Reg. Mbike into Thailand - Page 6

It seems the days moving around freely in Thailand are over and gone by now. You need to get your permits through an authorised travel agency and they will be responsible for your moves around in the country and thus will have to follow you around. Note that Thailand is divided up into 76 provinces (chang wat) and thus one average province isnt very big.

Note that a permit seems to be given only to move around in one province and that you have to exit through the same border that you came in. Exceptional cases as to exit at a different border from where you entered can be considered as from case to case.

I guess we still have to wait for the interpretations of these new laws but be prepared for the worst and expect a lot of paperwork and cash to be spent...

joshuwaa 30 Jun 2016 16:24

I don't see anything in there that says they will be responsible for your movements, just that all requests for permits will go through them. And it also says exceptions will be made for transit since this law is directed at neighbouring countries and making sure people aren't abusing their roads. I think motorcycle travellers are an exception and one they will easily account for.

Obviously it's a lot of interpretation but I'm not getting a very bad feeling about it. Just a couple more emails and bits of paperwork to fill out before travelling as you do already.
