Morocco - Cross the Atlas, reach the Sahara and return May '11

Morocco trip anyone? I am taking a trip to Morocco in May, dates will be around Friday the 6th to Monday the 16th (give or take and wandered if anyone else will be around or would like to join me for some or all of the trip. Objective for the trip is to cross the atlas, spend a night camped in the Sahara and return to Spain in one piece. I aim to do as many tracks as time allows without working too hard and have built in two rest days (possibly three), the itinerary is as follows;

1 Tangier to El Kebab Metalled road 388km
2 El Kebab to Tinerhir MH2 Tracks 241km
3 Tinerhir to Nekob MH4 Tracks 112km
4 Nekob to Zegora MS1 Tracks 121km
Zagora to Foum Zguid MS5 Tracks 130km
5 Foum Zguid to Tagounite MS7 Tracks 163km
6 Tagounuti to Tangier Metalled Road 920km
7 Spare day as needed
8 Spare day as needed
9 Spare day as needed
10 ferry to Spain

So it's pretty much a good ride with mostly tracks, only want to use asphalt when I need to make good time.

Am travelling on an XT660z which has been mildly modified to cope with this sort of trip.

Drop me a line.

Cheers,
TL

Hi TL,

You say your XT600 is mildy modified for the trip.
Just "how" modified?

My brother has loaned me his bike, as he fell off his other bike and really did some damage to himself.
Would a 2000 year, standard Africa Twin be up to it?

Africa Twin is perfect for the job

Africa twin is perfect for this trip, my Tenere is very slightly modded, with crash bars, bash plate, knobblies and an ohlins suspension, other than that and the luggage it's bog standard. It's very much in the same weight catogory as the Africa Twin. If you are coming from the UK, the Africa twin will be way more comfy than the Ten would be on that route.

Haven't looked at all your route but #2 was reengineered and tarmaced a couple of years ago. You could head south down the Dades instead which is piste from Agoudal to M'semrir. And if the weather conditions are OK you could take the gorge link piste from M'semrir to Tamtatouchte.

Cheers Tim, that changes things a bit, much obliged for the heads up.

Hi guys,
I'd be interested in joining you, might be tight on dates though. I'm not back in the country until the 7th May. Could probably leave UK 9th May...

hello tim
you say that the road is now paved. is that the road from el kebab to tinerhir? i thought only a part of it was tarmac and there were some km´s of piste. will be travelling to morocco in september with a standard transalp 600, aiming to high atlas and anti atlas routes. thank you
