Mexico-Central America-South America

Hey there everyone, names Noah, and im planning a trip leaving in October from LA into mexico through central america then into south america. Im still planning and outfitting my KLR-650 for the trip. Im from miami and have a basic grasp of spanish and the customs and traditions of south america. Im very laid back and down to earth and am in no rush! I plan on doing miles but stopping anywhere fun or cool to hang out and meet people, hike, surf, explore, fish, boat, party, or just have a few cold ones bier It'd be great knowing other people biking through around this time either as a travel buddy or the occasional meet up pal while on the trip. I get along with anybody and everybody and love having a good time. Also if there are any veterans of this kinda trip i'd love to hear from ya for any tips or advice. reach me here or at my email- noahorth (at) hotmail .com

Gugie1 15 May 2011 23:50

Hey Noah
Im arriving Guatemala October and buying a bike (prob a KLR ) and heading to Ushuaia , leaving Guatemala prob mid to end Oct . So keep in touch as to where you are at the time and maybe we can catch up somewhere and have a beer .I started the trip last July in Alaska and only got to Guatemala , broke my leg and had to go back to NZ .

Guillaume 16 May 2011 03:48

I'll be leaving Montreal on a my mighty KLR on the 17th of october and going all the way to Ushuaia.

It seems there will be a few KLR going south this year.

I'm sure we could all arrange our own little HU meeting somewhere along the way...

noahknowsbest 18 May 2011 20:12

Sounds great. Im planning on leaving Florida late September and maybe hang out in LA for a bit before i leave. Ill definitely stay in touch as it would be great to start off with some people.

Swin 19 May 2011 13:03

Hi all,

I'm planning on leaving the UK in October / November for Columbia. I'll be buying a bike there hopefully (probably KLR or similar) - anyone any experience of doing this?

Guillaume - I got your PM, thanks.

I'd definitely be up for meeting up with all or some of you - When do you think you'd be reaching Columbia?

Cheers,
Joe

Gugie1 20 May 2011 11:47

Hello everyone!
I'm from Colombia and I'll be riding alone on a R1200 GSA from Houston to Panama starting July 3rd. It would be excellent to find some company! Got only 1 month vacation though.

Can help anyone with info from Colombia.

dKw1 7 Jun 2011 03:07

Heading south in November. Bornracer sent you a PM.

Cruise 13 Jun 2011 07:40

What a start to the trip and a great idea. The only downfall is the costly boat trip across to the mainland.

I did Baja this Feb and the place is amazing. Would have no issues doing it again. I'll have to talk to my friends who "may" be doing the race this year. Would open the opportunity for me to get my bike down there, help with the race, and then take off from there.

I'm going to look into this.

Texas to Tiera del Fuego

Hi Noah and others,

I'm heading south in early September from Austin, Texas. I'm 44, fit, experienced traveler in Latin America, speak Spanish and riding a DR650. I'm interested in riding with like minded folks for some or all the way. I have a plan, but not an itenerary. The plan is to take my time. If anyone is heading the same way about the same time, I'd be interested in talking.

I've started a website that has my loose plan and gear list. I'd love to hear your feedback on the packing list. THE ADVENTURE BEGINS.

Plans are to go to Chile through Brownsville, TX

I have a tentative route worked down the east coast of Mexico and then crossing west through Guatemala and taking the west coast to Chile. I am still planning and organizing. I would like to make it to the equinox at Chichen Itza September 21-22, 2011. If you are interested in possibly meeting up sometime let me know.

I didn't want to bring a fully loaded 1150 GS and deal with all the weight and service issues. Please feel free to PM me and see if we can come up with a day ride to two around these parts..

I might be taking you up on this offer!

If all goes to plan I will be down there around middle of Nov.

Where abouts are you? When we rode south of LaPaz in the spring we went down the flats then up and over the mountains to the sand road following the coast to Cabo. Are you before or after the mountain crossing?

Oh ok!

Somewhat familiar with the area. We stopped somewhere along there for lunch on the way north of Cabo. Great little Mexican restaurant. They liked our bikes and that we were from Canada. Took pictures with us, etc. Right hand side of the road when coming into one of those towns.

I'll see how things go. LONG ways to go but if all works out wouldn't mind visiting a fellow CDN in Baja!

More planning to Mexico

I'm narrowing down (is that correct in Englisch ?) my departure to the 4th week in November...
if it's really cold may rent a small Uhaul from Santa Fe NM
maybe to tucson AZ, room for more bikes I think if anyone gets the urge or is too cold here to ride -
-usually that time of year can be frozen here but by the time one gets to Deming even is 15 degrees warmer...
I just dug out my winter riding gloves

There's a place to stop here if needed in SF and great mechanic :innocent:

Heading South

:funmeterno:Am trying to leave Los Angeles in next 2-3 days. Would love to join some other(s) to cross the border at Nogales. If not or in addition, we could meet somewhere farther south, depending on route. My tentative route right now is:
Los Angeles to Nogales to Mazatlan to Durango (Devil's Spine http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...funmeterno.gif). I just hope the tires (not new) will last until Durango so I can put on the tires I'm carrying with me. I assume that you know about the Devil's Curse when riding the Devil's Spine. It makes you (or me at least) faster and faster around those twisty curves, especially with all the heavy/slow trucks.
From Durango to Zacatecas to San Luis Potosi to Guanajuato to Queretero to Teotihuacan to Cuernavaca to Oaxaca to San Cristobal de Las Casas. From here, I don't know if I want to stop at Palenque on the way to Chetumal to Belize to Tikal to Coban in Honduras, going around Tegucigalpa on to Nicaragua, stopping in Leon, but refusing to give in to the multiple demands by cops for fines for mythical infractions and finally arriving in Pura Vida land. I not only want to polish my Spanish enough to teach a course sometime at the U.
I don't mean to sound inflexible and I like to be spontaneous. I got back last year from doing just this trip, Mexico to Ushuaia, and back. I have lived and worked in Costa Rica and Bolivia, and spent time off traveling throughout much of Latin America. Consequently, I don't have many 'must see' places and except for friends/relatives in Costa Rica, and friends in Argentina, I don't HAVE to via any particular route and am totally amenable to following others.

Gentlemen,

we'll be heading the opposite direction to you all, starting in a couple of days from Santiago and heading across to Brazil then a big loop south before heading all the way back up the east coast. If we could meet up with anyone for a beer, we'd be keen to hear what lays ahead!

Noah, ive sent you a quick email as well.

Cheers.

Departure

Look to leave either this Sunday or at the latest, on Monday. Plan to cross at Nogales and spend probably a week getting through Mexico and another week to Nicaragua and Costa Rica. That puts me around you toward the end of November, probably after Thanksgiving (in Nicaragua, with gringos?).
I would very much like to ride together, especially if anyone else wants to go south via Belize, Tikal, Copan, and skip El Salvador. This is my current pipe dream/fantasy route. Am very flexible and open to alternatives.
I'm an seasoned veteran (old fart) of 65, riding a new-to-me '04 Suzuki Wee Strom (DL650). I rode to Ushuaia and back in '09/'10, a month in New Zealand last spring, and went from Los Angeles to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska to Michigan to North Carolina and back to LA this summer. On this trip, I hope to return to Ushuaia, visiting friends in Rio Gallegos, Argentina, then back north to some port to ship bike and me to South Africa. When asked how long I'll be gone, I often say that it will be between six months and six years.
Let's stay in tough. Feel free to email direct to motomon at pobox dot com

Heading South

Have finally left and I am now in Guatemala and happy to be out of Mexico. The first part of traveling in Mexico was fine and I didn't get killed nor robbed. I had to pay $448 just to bring my motorcycle in. This is to prevent the entry and sale of vehicles. But, I ended up only getting back $400, so I was paying $6/day just to be there. I fell and sprained my ankle in Mazatlan on very deep gravel. I had a horrible time getting through Mexico City, including having a very difficult time changing money there. The last straw was having to spend three hours leaving Mexico. I hope I never have to return there. There are many beautiful places there and some very nice people, but the bureaucracy is awful.

My entry into Guatemala was fantastic. The officials were very efficient and went out of their way to be helpful. The hotel I'm in is decent, but the staff are as helpful and friendly as one could wish. I even got the cook, Doña Flor, to make Gallo Pinto, essentially rice and beans mixed with spices like cilantro.

I expect to be into El Salvador within a day or two. Then Honduras for a day or less. Then Nicaragua, where a friend is waiting for me. Then I plan to visit family and friends in Costa Rica. Then Panama, Columbia, Ecuador, Peru, Argentina, maybe Bolivia, Brazil, and ???

I also lost my smart phone in Mexico and don't have phone numbers, and misplaced my camera before I left. Duh
