Mexico and Central America: Mar-Jul 2011

Now that I'm a few months closer to the anticipated start date (March 1st-ish, 2011) I figured I'd post the invite again: anyone want to head into Mexico with me?

I'll be traveling through Mexico and Central America for ~5 months, with no real itinerary except that I was looking to head down the gulf coast first. That, however, is not set in stone.

Reply or PM me if you're interested in joining forces in Northern Mexico!

In New Mexico now (Fanta Se) and planning to head south late Feb; destination Brazil. Was planning to head out March as well, but I had to push up a week or so to rendezvous with friends near Oaxaca.

Maybe grab a coffee or beer and talk routes?

Peregrine40 11 Jan 2011 17:48

Hey Alpiner84,

Responding to you here because HUBB doesn't allow PM's for me yet. I need 5 or more posts.

I'll be on a relatively big bike, a 1200cc Ulysses V-twin with plenty of gear and a fixed speed bicycle on a homemade rack on back. Yah, I know, but I was a competitive cyclist and I need a bike with me at all times. Besides, great way to get around when I stop in villages and chill for several days. Besides, why burn fuel, make noise and throw around a huge bike if you don't need to? (says the one with the 1200 cc beast!) Anyhow, the setup works out pretty well.

Anyhow, it's my first trip down south by moto, so I'm pretty open. Been in Afghanistan as (civilian) rule of law guy for several years. I'm out now and have time to wander.

Just getting the specifics for Mexico straightened out. Working on bike stuff mostly. Cold in Fanta these days. Looking for out of way - but no necessarily dirt - roads. I'll be camping as much as possible at camping grounds and with friends on the way down. My ride and I luv curves! Probably down via Ojinaga crossing in Tejas, down to Chihuahua, south at Cuauhtemoc to Hidalgo de Parral, Santa Maria Del Oro, Santa Teresa del Llano, Durango to Mazatlan, and south via coast then Tepic to Guanahuato, San Miguel del Allende, Queretario, Teloca, Cuernevaca then to Oaxaca.
From there it's open territory. I'll boat if from Panama to Columbia, then Venezuela and north Brazil (Boat down the Amazon). Destination is Arraial d'Ajuda, near Porto Seguro in Bahia. Just winging it most of the time.

Crazy. But what the hell. At this point I'll be traveling alone. Happy to bump into others along the way, sharing parts of the trip, and definitely sharing stories.

alpiner84 14 Jan 2011 01:51

Sweet, sounds good. Not so sure about the bike-on-bike thing, but whatever floats your boat! Or pedals your bike, I suppose...

My itinerary (or lack thereof) is completely open, and I have a decently long timeline, so no rush for anything. I'm all about the side roads if I'm with someone else, but won't be doing much of them on my own. I've done Chihuahua before, and I'm not inclined to head that way in March (brrr), so I'll most likely be heading down nearer one of the coasts.

So, when you're able to PM people, send me your number, and I'll give you a call next time I'm heading through SF so we could grab a beverage. Cheers!

Update

Decided to cross the Baja border at Mexicali on ~March 15th. If anyone will be in Baja then, let me know!

bigalsmith101 7 Feb 2011 01:18

My Sentiments Exactly!!!

I read your blog. Complete understanding followed. Nice XT225 (250?) too!

My friend Tom and I (Alex) head south from Seattle the last week of March or first week of April. Central America is our first destination, no timeframe in mind (ok 6 months?). DR650's the bike of choice. Baja is first on our list. Keep us posted eh?

Hi all,

Getting close to my own departure date now. Riding down from San Francisco 2nd/3rd week of March. The trip is Panama and back. ~4months.

Going through Baja first then ferry to mainland Mex. I'll be going pretty slow and plan to do a lot of dirt roads and some surfing along the way. Going solo on a DRZ400.

Hoping to cross paths with some of you down there. I'll give a shout as I'm closer to hit the border.

bigalsmith101 16 Feb 2011 04:52

Hey 3Crowns

My friend and I are headed they same route. Chasing the sun. We're on separate DR650's. Send a shoutout/pm when you are into Baja. Dirt//offroad is great. We're leaving the Seattle area the 1st of April.

Getting close!

Hi Alpiner,

I am new to the forum and am looking for inspiration and planning for a Mexico trip. I am an experienced Spanish language traveler, with years of on and off road motorcycle riding and racing experience. I have counted owning 23 motorcycle.

Am looking to meet possible travel buddies, as I don't like to travel alone.
My bike of choice for now is a BMW 650. Don't know how far south I want to go, as I need to be back in the US in Mid May.

I will fill out my profile soon.

Mexico bound

I am looking forward to leaving around the beginning of april, on my 80' honda cx500 street bike, an old beast, but a brave little soldier. Anyway Im workin my way down the mainland pacific side, and planned on not stopping until Mazatlan, staying a couple days, then on down the coast stopping and sightseeing along the way...

Thought I'd add my name to the list. I should be down that way mid to late march depending on if I can get my bike out of Edmonton and can cope with the rain on the West coast.

Planning on heading through the center of Mexico, Chihuahua way. I'll put a shout out when I get down there and see who is about.

Glennn1234 3 Mar 2011 14:57

I am about ready to leave for Baja in about a week. Having postponed trip to S.A. for now due to former bike not up to it ! Having bought new klr and equipping it for long distance travel am now taking off !
Anybody traveling down Baja way within a week or so, lets plan to meet somewhere.

(not sure how far I will go but plan on being back in S.F. before summer for sure)

Hello,

I'll be heading down south late April early May from North Carolina. It would be great to meet some people along the way. My final destination is Brazil.
I looked at your blog and I am impressed at your experience. I'm impressed and extremely intimidated by everyone's experience on this site. I feel overwhelmed to with all the planning and preparation! I just want to get on a bike and go! Hahaha!

Bryan

bigalsmith101 11 Mar 2011 18:55

Don't worry so much Bmorales,

Bryan,

That is the secret. No worrying allowed. Have a great time. I suggest you don't haul ass for 3 months to get to Brazil in time. No more planning allowed. Drink more beer. Have more :funmeterno:, and meet us somewhere along the way bier.

Cheers,

My Friend

No worries ! If you can connect in Mexico with other riders it will all come together quickly.Pack repack and take less,by the time you get to Panama you could write a book yourself. Get your bike and gear right and get on.No worries.

I'm heading down to Zipolite at the end of the week from SF. Crossing at Mexicali and then hoping to make Mazatlan in a few days and then just follow the coast down.

First trip down south of the border. Done some research and I think I have most of my ducks in a row. Taking a Beemer road bike. Any tips on places to stay or what to visit or any advise in general would be very welcome. And if anyone is going down around then, I would love to ride with someone. My Route/ schedule is entirely flexible.

chinga la cuota

Please keep me up to date on your itinerary, specifically for guatemala and farther south. I'm going to zip through MX on the cuotas (forget the casetas though, those gates don't stop bikes, and the federales don't care.). I've burned up too much time in MX anyway, time for something new.

Anyone in the area now?

Well, the trip is two months underway! I'm currently in Guadalajara and will be for at least a week more. Is anyone in the region, want to meet up, either here in the city or along the road south? I'm interested in visiting Guanajuato, then heading into the Yucatan via Oaxaca, but I'm flexible. Best way to get a hold of me is email: cougra77@yahoo.com

Happy trails everyone!
Sarah
