Malaysia, Thailand and so on, September 2015

Riding through Malaysia and south east Asia, no hurry and no particular destination. Anybody wanting to join a 26 year old Australian male, interested in local people, philosophy and history? Oh and having great rides off the map! Camping at times. Let me know. Julian

Hello Julian

I'm looking at doing a similar trip but leaving from Sydney. I'm senior motion designer recently made redundant from Channel Nine and I have a few months off I would like to use for a little adventure.

I'm 41, looking 30, I was born and bread in France and moved to Australia 15 years ago.

I'm interested in philosophy too, world cultures, photography, etc.

Where about are you from in Oz?

Regards, Olivier.

I've been in Sydney for five years, originally from Albury. When are you planning to start? I'm currently in Sumatra and will be in Malaysia to buy a bike in early September.

South East Asia

Hi guys,

when were you looking at leaving OZ?

I am currently in the final stages of planning my trip to leave from OZ. Flying my bike to Indonesia, then catching the ferry to Singapore. Then touring through Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Burma, and then into China before heading up to Mongolia and Russia.

Regards

Richard

Sounds like I'll be in the area about when you are Rich. What are you riding? Will you pay for the tour to cross Burma? What do you know about getting to the Stans through China?

Did you check the annual weather cycle for that area in September?

MikeS 23 Aug 2015 18:12

Just to note, the eastern Malaysian islands (Tioman / Perhentian etc) normally shut down between Nov and Feb due to the monsoon season. Also Vietnam can get hit by storms coming from Philippines around about then too. So maybe consider sticking to the west coast of Malaysia around then if that's when you're travelling as those islands are generally fine.

Haha yeah, I'm going to get wet. But the timing of this opportunity wasn't up to me, so I'll deal with it. Luckily I'm not interested in making great distances each day, I'm looking for at least one week stays in each place, so I can relax about rain and progress.
Although it does put a bit of a dampener on my camping plans unless I can very well waterproof all my kit.
All part of the fun I suppose.
P.s. if you want to help advise me on bikes, please do so in the other thread under which bike? ;-)

Done :)

The rain isn't really that big a deal, it wil pour for an hour or so then usually stop. Also I don't bother with waterproof bike gear here, its always warm so you'll dry out quick enough.

Camping - I'd only really camp at higher altitudes as just too hot and sticky otherwise. In fact, on my way from Australia to UK, the first time I got the tent out was in the mountains in the north of India. A room everywhere is generally cheap enough.

Also heading that way - could we meet in Laos and cross China together?

Hi guys. Consider me the "support vehicle. I will be driving a Toyota Landcruiser with my wife.

Our itinerary gets us to Laos around February or March, maybe even April. What's the chances of forming a group and getting those guide costs down as far as we can?

Phil
