Hi Guys,

Ive been dreaming for almost 5 years to do this trip. The hardest part has happened and all the paperwork has been done:D
My carnet will arrive within 2 weeks and my bike is being shipped to UK in November. With shipping going to take 47 days Ill be in the UK in December.
My plan is to travel down the west coast of Africa. First up on my list will be to make it to Dakar. After that its going to be see how it goes as the ebola epidemic has make the route interesting. Im also planning on crossing DRC from Kinshasa to Lubumbashi and hoping to do it with someone. So if your keen for some adventure and would like to catch up for a beer Id love to catch up. I will be traveling on a ktm690r. I plan to camp most of the way.

Hi Pat, me and my OH will be in Morocco and going down the west coast to Cape Town in a few days, but only on 110cc scooters.

I dare say your pace may be quicker than ours but our paths may cross en route?

limitablesnake 14 Sep 2014 23:00

Hi Pat, I completed London-Cape Town-London ten days ago on a 990... down the west, back the east.

The ebola problem is a year older and I missed out on the Kinshasa-Lubumbashi section by going straight south through DRC/Angola/Namibia but other than that I have a reasonable amount of up to date stuff on what's going on.

PM me if you have any Q's and GOOD LUCK

Charlie

PS I travelled with an Aussie from Addis to Khartoum on a KLR650... top bloke.

I think I'll be doing the same route early next year. Ridding a 990. When do you plan to cross over to Africa?bier

Hi guys,

planing on leaving Portugal in Jan05 on my way to South Africa - down the west coast and up the east. No fixed route...and time!
Will probably meet somewhere along the way!

Charlie aka limitablesnake would it be OK if I bother you with a few questions on route, visas and such! Great job on doing Africa all the way! :thumbup1:

Cheers,
RN

Hi Guys,

As it stands my bike is packed up and waiting for the carnet to arrive. Its looking like Ill be shipping it on the 17th of October as its going to take 47 days to arrive.
Im flying out on the 4th of December to the UK.
I want to be in Morocco but the end of December to start the long ride south.
I have started a blog that is documenting my lead up to the trip and will be my daily accounts of my trip.
Yesterday I bought a cool little device called a inReach which ill be able to send text or SOS messages anywhere in Africa or the world for that matter.
Here is a link to my blog. Check it out share it. Id like to hear from other people because I want to hear about the places I should check out not the places that will be just a disappointment. Having spent 5 year driving overland trucks all over east Africa years ago from Egypt to Cape Town multiple times. I know some places are just a tourist trap and not really worth it. Having said that Wesyt Africa is the real deal and will be a blast and a great Adventure! I know my way around a boarder and corrupt cops.

At the end of the day as my blog name suggests my big plan is the road from
Kinshasa to Lubumbashi. Im very flexible for the rest of the trip. I want to go to Dakar. and to Benn Amira in Mauritania.

Id love to catch up for a beerbier and chat about the :funmeteryes:

Regards

Patrick

Hello Charlie
Glad you made it back home.
How was shipping the bike? Did you ship your bike to Turkey or straight to the UK?

Hi Schenkel... I flew my bike Turkish Airlines, Khartoum to Istanbul. I used Adel Waheb for the freight and Garo for the packing and clearance... but only after the price came down a bit.

I tried to get more competitive packing quotes but the Khartoum freight handlers don't like to pitch head to head. There doesn't seem to be the same level of haggling as in other countries but you may understand the Sudanese business culture better than me!

Thank you for your help. I really appreciated it!

Charlie

Hi Charlie,
I'm wondering why you didn't ride through Egypt and how was Sudan and Kenya security wise? I'm in Europe now having riden from Australia and would like to ride to South Africa but am a little concerned about the security in Sudan and Kenya. Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks
Brian

Brian I would not be concerned with the security heading down the east coast route. As long as you stick to the east side of the Nile it's all good. I have done that route 4 times as I use to drive tourist from Cape Town to Cairo in overland trucks.
