London-CZ-Romania-Turkey-Iran 28 July

Intended - and booked - route is:

- Depart Eurotunnel 28 July 12.35pm.
- Enroute to Prague - 3 days (Leuven, Bamberg, Pilsen)
- Prague - 3 days
- Krakow (Poland) - Auschwitz/Bikenau - 3 days
- Romania - 7 days, all the highlights incl. Transfaragasan
- ..... to Izmir in Turkey via Gallipoli, with 3 nights in Bucharest for laundry
- 14 days in Turkey, enroute to Van, in the south east, close to Iranian border, taking in Cappadocia (Goreme), obligatory photo in Batman, etc
- Serou border
- Iran - 23 days, via Shiraz, Mashhad, Tehran, Tabriz.
- Turkey - northern parts.
- Back to Blighty, arriving about 3 October.

My thorough and recent research suggests that I do not need a carnet for Iran. One is recommended but I will obtain at the border. It will involve time and cost (US$200, cheaper than ADAC and RAC, and considerably less hassle). Alternately I have a 'fixer' lined up for US$300.

I've arranged bike service in Bucharest - I'm on an F800GS.
I've arranged new tyres to be fitted in Izmir in Turkey,

I'm looking for a travel companion for part - any part.

Happy to hear from anyone that has coincidental plans. :scooter:

Let's keep in touch as we have 2-3 guests every week riding to İran, or Trabzon-Sochi ferry...Syria route is closed and not recommended yet...As a meeting point for bikers in İstanbul, probably you will meet some bikers here to accompany your trip...Also free maps and catalogs available with advices and tips of our members who are always on travel in the areas...
Wish you all the best..
Zeki.

No CdP in I.R. of Iran????

The trip sounds great. Good luck with future companion(s).

Can you please explain the way (trick?) to avoid Carnet in Iran? I would be really interested (never heard of it and used it twice there) doh

Brettfrom Oz 14 Jun 2011 12:02

Sounds like a a great trip. I may be interested in the journey to Turkey.

I'm originally from Brissie and have always wanted to make it to Gallipoli. I have a K1600GT and now live in London. Have done plenty of touring through Europe but mostly Spain/France/Germany.

Would be interested to learn more.

Any questions about Czech, just ask. I would spend just one day in Prague and visited Cesky Krumlov for one day and Telc for half a day/ both towns are UNESCO sites/.

I'm leaving London on 24 July, heading to Köln for an appointment, then leaving Köln on 27 July on a very similar route - Prague then down to Turkey via Hungary, Romania etc (incl. Transfagarasan). Only thing is I need to be in Athens by mid August, so I intend to go as far east in Turkey as poss, then down to coast and into Greece via Rhodes (for example) and ferry to Athens. Then back to UK by end of the month. On a GSA and camping most of the time - no specific itinerary, just a direction and a deadline for Athens which will determine how far I get before I turn west.

So we could be on the road at more or less the same time...

Wow. It sounds like you have put a good amount of preperation into your trip already.
I will leave Germany towards Iran at the end of August, so timewise we are not quite compatible.
I am also interested in knowing how you intend to get into Iran without the carnet. You sure about this? It can be a real bummer finding out once you are there, that there is no way to get in the country.
Have a good trip and maybe we meet on the road :).

Hi,

Google plus search this site. Several people have recently taken a car into Iran from Turkey without a CDP. Some hassle and expense is involved, but IMHO, it's less tortuous than going through ADAC or the RAC.

Hiya Brett,

I'm writing this email from Brissie, the night after NSW equalised in Origin 11. Bugger.

My itinerary includes Gelibolu (Gallipoli), for the obvious pilgrimage, and I'm setting off from London.

Let me know what info you're after.

Hooroo

Thanks for your recommendations. My plans are to visit:

1. Karlovy Vary,
2. Prague - 3 nights (catchup on laundry) and take a trip to Pilsen (bier)
3. Kutna Hora (Church of Bones)
4. Litomysl
5. Olomouc
6. Frydek-Mistek (enroute to Krakow).

Plus your suggestions.

Any other 'must-sees' you can recommend?

Cheers

Migo,

You're lucky that you live in Germany, hence ADAC is on your doorstep. I live in Australia and my bike is English registered, which makes obtaining a CDP problematic. I've spoken to, and emailed several people from this site that have recently been from Turkey into Iran without a CDP.

Search this site and you'll find their posts.

Since you live in Germany I would use ADAC. If you get completely stuck, there is a 'fixer' who'll sort it for you - his details can also be found on this site.

Hi George,

Shame about SOO II but at least the decider will be exciting and hopefully a fitting send off for Lockie. Let's hope NSW don't spoil the fairytale ending. I have recorded the game (shown live here on Sky) but have not watched it yet but from what I've read in the Aussie press it sounds like NSW played well.

I'm very keen on joining you if you are still looking for company.

Will anyone else be starting from London with you?

Are you able to send me the intended route in Google Maps/Earth or similar. I will program into Mapsource and have a closer look.

How much of the accomodation (and what standard) have you pre-booked? or are you going to play it my ear on a daily basis?

Let me know when you are scheduled to arrive in London and maybe we can catch up.

Cheers

Brett
