Libya from Egypt to Tunisia, late Spetember

Hi

I plan to ride across Libya from East to West late September 2009.
The current visa requirements are that you must travel in a group of 4 or more.
I have hooked up with a highly recommended tour company who can provide the visa service, guide and can possibly tag me onto another of their groups.
Just wondered if there was anyone else looking to cross Libya around that time who would like to team up for the ride, share guide costs etc.
I can be flexible around the departure date by a couple of weeks and could meet in Cairo or Alexandria,
It would be great to hear from anyone who’s interested. Any advice on visas and getting into Libya from travellers who have recently been there would be very welcome too.

All the best,
Gordon

Hey Gordon,

Don't know how strict your schedule is, but my brother and I are planning on heading from Egypt to Tunisia as part of a longer ride. But, we probably won't get to that section until at least mid-December 2009. If that's too later, I'd still be interested in hearing about your trip and how you handle the group requirements.

I'm going to Tunisia mid-October and if you want to do it the other way (west to east) i'll be glad to join you.

Planned only for Tunisia but if i find somebody else i will definitely cross Libya.

I can meet you in Manchester in September since i will be going north to John o'Groats.

Hi Gordon

I'm currently in Tanzania and on my way up to Europe. My initial plan was to cross Libya into Tunisia and then catch a ferry to Europe.
But then the Swiss arrested G's son in Geneva and since then relations between Lybia and Switzerland are rather tense.
I also have a British passport but my bike has a Swiss registration...
So I actually planned to go via Jordan, Syria and Turkey to Europe.
However, I might still go for the option to cross Lybia. Have u got any idea yet on the costs involved and how many days are u planning to stay in the country?
The dates could maybe suit me, depends how long I take to get up to Egypt...

Regards

Claudio

Hi, thanks for getting in touch, but I'll be leaving the UK late August and should reach Egypt roughly one month later.
I'll certainly post information on visas and getting a guide sorted out.
Good luck with your plans
Gordon

Hi, Sorry but I'm committed to heading down through Syria and Jordan then (hopefully) returning via Libya in late September. If you are delayed at all and need a place to stay in Manchester heading to or from JOG in October please get back in touch - have a spare room and garaged parking.
Good luck, Gordon

Hi Claudio
Still waiting to hear back from the agency regarding group numbers and prices. I'm also exploring an elusive transit visa. Your UK passport should be OK - as long as long as the bike's docs are in your name and you have a valid visa.
I'll contact you again when I know more and see where you are up to heading north.
Ride safely and have a fab time,
Gordon

Hi Richard
That sounds like an awesome trip. Unfortunately, I won't reach Egypt until late September, so I doubt we'll be in those parts at the same time.
I'm still working on getting into Libya and will post info on my progress here.
Ride safe and all the best, Gordon
