Lagunas Route / Bolivia - Next week! (OCT2014)

Hi all,

Bit of a long shot, if anyone - bikes or 4x4 - are doing the Lagunas Route y Salar de Uyuni, would love to hear from you. I will be starting in San Pedro and heading north. Riding solo on a XR250.

Cheers!

I'm working on going to the salt flats as well. Keep us updated on the adventure if it's possible.

Did five days down there, amazing place - certainly some of the the most impressive series of landscapes, and along with the Salar and Paso San Francisco, definitely the best riding I've done.

People are a bit alarmist in my opinion, yes it is remote and yes it is bloody cold at night. But if your going to do remote riding you might as well do it there, as plenty of jeeps going through if you have issues. Nonetheless you would not want any sort of mechanical or health issues out there.

Getting fuel is easily done as the 4x4 drivers will happily flog you some as they but it at government subsided prices and will charge tourist prices, ie 7B per litre - not bad! The best place to get this is at the Hot springs, as many come and wait around whist their passengers take a dip.

Take plenty of food however as even in the villages there is not much going on at the stores. Take your time and make sure your vehicle is in top form. Some of the washboard is absolutely brutal and quickly demoralising. After five days down there driving through deep sand at 70kph no longer worries me at all!!! Are you going to San Pedro? Avoid the "road" that runs south from San Cristobal towards quetena, it was very, very bad and in 100k I didn't see one car or soul. I made it back from Lake Verde to San Cristobal in a day, but wouldn't try it again. Could have gone all the way to Uyuni but took wrong turn. Any questions just ask!

Take a GPS and a half decent map!!!

Hi! In a few days I'm off to Salar de Uyuni, and I wanna keep it simple going from Salinas de Garci-Mendoza to Isla de los Pescados to Uyuni. It will be the first time I do off-road riding like that. Will there be some kind of tracks to follow to the Island? I suspect going to Isla de los Pescados from Salinas will be more difficult than from Uyuni, but we'll see. Where do I get a decent map?
