Yeah, Bolivia

Hi Dave, i am juan, also riding on an xt600. In iquique (chile ) at the time, but heading to uyuni on sunday, should be there by tuesday, i guess. Planning on doing iquique - Colchane/pisiga border pass, and then to Lica and across the salar to uyuni. You should have a good map of bolivia (i dont), do you see a road linking pisiga with lica and to uyuni? Someguy told me about it, but cant find anything about it.
I saw on the news something about hail storms falling all over bolivia, any comments on that?

May be we can meet, my email,
restrepojuancarlos@yahoo.com
I am heading north as well,
regards,

juan

Yungas!

Hi guys!

I qas 10 years ago on my Tenere 600 in Bolivia, best time of my life! Best loop were the yungas! La Paz - Copacabana(Titicacalake) - then north east over a pass to Consata - Sorata - Mapiri - Guanay - and I ended up on the yungaside of the high passroad to La Paz! I don´t remember all the villages, perhaps i mixed them up.... But there were a lot of rivers to cross - it was the best!!! If you need better directions, just let me know. I have to find my old maps....

Ten years later still dreaming of Bolivia!

Route to Bolivia

Hiya, dont have my map on me at the moment, but we were thinking of crossng to uyni via San pedro de Atacama, which is a popular route for the 4x4s who do the salt lake tours... but then heard stories that that road is terrible quality and can distroy yr bike, so as we are 2 up on a little bike with far too much luggage we went round the top Arica (Chile) to Putre to Tambo Qeumando (i think) and then to La Paz, it was a lovely route through the Lauca national park... we stayed in Putre (fuel available from the shop) and then drove to La Paz in one day, easy, all paved not too busy. The Chillean border was a bit of a prob as ew have a chillean bike and they were not sure if we were exporting it or just trying to leave temporaily...

I´ll have a look at my map this eve and write back when I have checked out your route. There are 2 maps available we found for bolivia, the military (IGM) does a passable one, and also the german company Reise do a pretty good one, found it in la paz in the toursit area...

We´re off to Sucre tommorow, then Potosi, then Uyni prob in a weeks time or so... we´ll look ot for ya!

Good luck,

dave

hi there

hi there dave, im an australian traveller on a dommie coming north through bolivia at the moment

i left sucre this morning, currently in cochabamba, was it you that i passed this morning on the road out of sucre? i was going a bit quick around a turn and i didnt clock what kind of bike it was

make sure you stop at joyride cafe in sucre, gert the owner should be able to help you out with any questions you might have about bolivian roads

i ended up paying to follow a 3 day jeep tour of the salar and laguna colorada etc from uyuni to uyuni, i found some of the roads south of the salar pretty tough (even with all my gear and gas in the jeep) but if you took your time and carry enough gas you should be ok (or pay to follow a tour and chuck your pillion in the jeep if the going gets to tough!)

cheers mate

In Iquique

Hi Juan,

Kate and I are in Iquique, too. We might have some choice words to utter about a certain bike shop in Santiago....will see, more later, no doubt.

We are theoretically on our way to Nazca but are stranded till the great Alberto fixes our bikes...well mine at the moment...Kate´s still needs checking... Probably till Friday.

Nelles does a half decent map of Bolivia which I have here. Let me know by text if you want to meet up (see pm)
