Heading to Mexico 2 August 2013 then South
Hi, Have just ridden 11,500 miles around the US & Canada (inc Alaska) and now travelling south. Bike (Tiger 800xc) is to be serviced in San Diego next week and I expect to cross into Baja on Friday 2nd-ish August. Spent most of last 12 weeks travelling alone so would be good to have a riding partner part some or all of 2nd part. Booked on Stahlratte on 10th Sept.

San Diego Meet up.
I am totally prepped to leave for Mexico/Panama on my KLR 650. Trouble is I am in Seattle. If I left Saturday I could be in SD the 8th or 9th of August. Think about it.

I live in Mexico City if you want to visit please contact me when can put you up and show you around.

Hi Oceanshi,
I am planning on riding through Baja, ferry to the mainland then the Pan Am to Panaema no later that the 8th Sept. Will be staying in CHEAP hotels, hostels or camping as on budget. Does this tie up with your plans ?? If so, I will check on time scales and may wait for you. Garrydymond & Tere, thanks for the offers which are very kind. Will let you know closer to the time if I head that way. Regards Dave |
Hook up.
I can be in SD on August 15, 2013. KLR 650. Fully prepped. Have make the SD to Cabo SL trip (RT) many times. Likewise as to Ferry from La Paz to Maz.
My traveling style seems similar to yours. Really like to camp and am fully equipped to cook pretty much anything anywhere. Want to hook up with Tere in MC DF. Possible all the way to TDF. At least Panama and want to take my time along the way. Familiar with Steel Rat and at the least would do the trip through the islands to Columbia possibly without MC. I like to snorkel and will bring a mask and snorkel. Also will bring lightweight spinning gear. It could be hot in Mexico. If you have the chance buy a large sham-wow. Soak it in water and drape it around the neck. Problem solved. |
This is the first time for me so can hang around until, say the 8th, but will have to move then. Otherwise it sounds ideal. It would to ride with someone who knows the area.

Timing
I understand your need for speed. I will see what I can do but have a couple of commitments I am waiting on. We will see and I will let you know.

Dave (and/or OceansHi):
I'm in San Diego. Though I can't make the trip south with you, I'd be happy to help out with anything you might need while you're in town. PM me if you think of anything a local can do to help you along on your ride. Danbier |
3590
Quest: There are 3590 road miles between SD and PCP. 940 from SD to La Paz and 2650 from Maz to PCP. This does not include the day of the Ferry crossing. So if we left 8/8 that would give you 29 days of road time. That comes out to 124 miles per day. It seems to me to result in a relaxing enough pace. My concern is that we get into a hurry up routine. I would like to avoid that though I enjoy the ride and sometimes eating up miles is fun.
What do you think? Also I think realistically I will be in SD on 8/10. Alan |

Alan,
Lets go for it. Instead of me sitting here in SD I can head north and explore some of the coast I didn't get to see. We can, therefore, meet up north of here somewhere. Please let me know what route you are taking and where you EXPECT to be each day and we can meet up. Sounds like a plan !! Tere, May be in contact before the 15th but hope all goes well and thanks for the offer. Dave |
Good news
Quest: This is great news. Only downside is I will have to cancel the HU meet up in BC. I will do everything I can to leave as early as possible. Possibly we could meet at the Tecate border station and cross over to Mexico there. Proterro Park is located right near it and there is camping if we have to overnight.
On the other had north of SD is good too. Let me know how far north you will go and we could meet there. Since you are posting you must have a computer. My email is AlanFHall@hotmail.com. Send me your contact info. and I will send you my phone, etc. Do you have a cell phone? What kind of range does your MC have? Let the adventure begin for me and continue for you. Alan |
Alan,
I have sent an e mail so let me know if you do not receive it. I didn't mention the mileage range though. If I cruise at 60 I can get 200 miles per tank. Hilly of stop start and it will be less. I have two reserve canisters of 2 & 4 lirers....if they do not disappear !! Dave |

You and I have to tie up some potentially loose ends. Do you have Mexican MC Insurance?. It cost US about $200 dollars for six months. Does not cover CA or South. It does cover road side assistance (flat tire) and liability. I think some form of it might be required. Get some before we cross. I will work with you on this. I also think there are cheaper versions. Also so you should get medical extraction insurance. This covers all of the places you are going and it is cheap. You need to join Amer. Auto Assoc. It costs $100 for massive coverage and is indispensable in a medical emergency. You go to an AAA office to do this. It takes about 10 minutes. Again I can help you with this if you want. It may be you already have this coverage. Great. If you do not and do not want it, that is OK too. But I would feel a lot better if you had it. Second. the further south we go the cheaper it becomes for hostel, cheap hotels food etc. In the mean time lets camp out a few times. I can cook for both of us as I have the equipment and skills for this. If you do not have them, buy a camper style dinner plate, cup and utensils. I think I have everything else. Let's keep our fingers crossed. Maybe we will be able to have a camp fire or two and swim in the Ocean. Sent an email to Tere. I would really like to visit her in Mexico City D.F. bier Alan |
