Florida to Creel H/U 06
I am thinking about attending the H/U event in Copper Canyon October '06 and would like to find riders from Florida/east coast to make the trip with. I'm on a GS1150 and would be primarily interested in a street/easy dirt route. Thanks

HI,
I'm planning on heading to Creel on an 05 1200GS. I made the trip a few years ago during the spring on a Harley and crossed the border at Presidio, TX. I am from North Carolina but maybe you could angle north and I could angle south and we could meet up somewhere in Mississippi. Jack |

It was about 1900 miles for me and I ran it in three days. Time was a concern that trip and normally I try to run about 400 per day, especially if riding in a group. You will love Mexico. Most of the roads are in great condition, the people are friendly, and it's fairly inexpensive. Don't believe a lot of the myths you here from folks that have probably never been there. My first trip was solo and I was a little apprenensive but it worked out fine.

So, three days to the border each way? How far from the border to Creel? My vacation schedule is tight and I'm still trying to figure out if I can actually do this. I'm even pondering trailering the beast so that I can drive straight through. I hate to see a GS on a trailer, but if it saves me a couple days I can spend in Mexico I'll endure with the shame.
BTW, did you make it to the HU meeting in NC? I was there, and it kind of inspired me to try harder to get to Creel this year. |
1200gs........................
Hey can I join you guys??

A great place to meet before crossing the border is:
Badlands ATV and Cycle 2185 West Amador Las Cruces, New Mexico tel. 505 647 8333 This keeps you out of El Paso and you can cross the border ar Colombus which is way less hectic. Tim at Badlands will order tires and install them for you or anything else you need. They are a KTM dealer and an all brands shop. Leon is a great mechanic. The shop races in Baja. Tim is a suspension expert. These guys will help. They have secure parking. A motel is next door, they weld. Crossing the border at Columbus does not take you out of your way and the introduction to Mexican driving is more gradual. This is a small border crossing. There is a good BMW shop nearby in the USA but darned if I can remember the name, I think they just lost official franchise rights cause BMWNA has their head up their ,,,, but that's another issue. Hope I see some of you there. Bill Shockley Tomahawk, WI |

As I recall, from Predidio to Creel takes about eight hours (as long as the border crossing goes smoothly). I camped in the desert about 45 minutes south of the border and made it to Creel by early afternoon the next day. Coming back I left Botapilas which is about 50 miles of dirt and 25 of pavement from Creel at first light and made it north of Chihuahua by evening, and that was on a suicide shift Harley. The roads are very good for the most part but try to stay off them after dark.

I've got the time off, so I think I'm going to do it. I'm up in the air about whether I should take my GS1150 or my DRZ. If I take the GS, I could just haul ass to the border. If I take the DRZ, I would probably trailer it or put it in the back of a pickup. If anyne else wanted to trailer from the east coast we could take turns driving and do it non-stop. (BTW: My hat is off to the person riding a DRZ to Mexico from Ft. Lauderdale. You must have a butt of steel.)
So who's in? |

Hope to see you there! Randy |
There is an offroad ride organizing that will start at the border and end in Creel. It is being led by the Gaspipe on the Adventure riders web site. Gaspipe is reported to be extremely knowledgable about the area and knows all the back roads to Creel. The details are still vague but the ride includes a fiesta in an town between the border and Creel the weekend before the meeting. The last time I checked there were 15 or more riders planning to go. I will try to post a better link ASAP. I found reference to it in the rides and pictures forum. If anyone has more info jump in here please.

They gave a presentation on the ride at the HU meeting in North Carolina in June. It sounds great. The only problem for east coast riders like myself is that they are crossing the border from somewhere in Arizona, which is even farther of a drive than El Paso, which itself is 1,600 miles from my house. Yikes.

I am heading down to Creel via Baja departing Canada on Sept. 25th (expect to cross into Mexico by the 29th). Let me know if you would like to hook-up before entering Mexico. Daren |

Daren, thanks for the offer. I was scheduled to ride on an organised tour of Baja, ending up in Creel, through Raw Hyde adventures. Unfortunately I have had to cancel the trip due to some back problems. Hope you all have a great time!
