Finally Headed to Mexico Tomorrow!!!

After 103 days on the road we have travelled from Vancouver to Inuvik and are now in Texas. Our route has taken us thru 2 provinces, 2 territories, and 19 states. We are waiting for tires to arrive tomorrow then we will cross at Del Rio!!! So excited to finally head South! We have not seen any overland bikers in many weeks so we hope to meet some in Mexico.

:scooter:

John Downs 2 Oct 2012 21:15

Hi Saralou,

I'll be heading south later this month. You're in for some fun! Although when I rode to Panama and back a couple years ago I didn't run into any other overlanders. I was riding back roads so that was part of it, but I was expecting to meet others on the road. Maybe this year will be different.

I will follow your ride report. Maybe see you down the road in Central or South America.

Safe travels!

Kindest regards,
John Downs

saralou 2 Oct 2012 21:23

Thanks John

We will have to make a point to meet for a beer then! We will be on the back roads too so there is a chance. Sara

Mex City

You are welcome to stay with us in Mex City. We will put you up, cook you breakfast and even show you around. All at no charge! (well you may have to wash the dishes)
I normally met people outside the city and guide them in.

saralou 3 Oct 2012 00:21

Wow thanks

That sounds amazing!! We are great dish washers and we bring beer!! I have not been in Mexico City since 1991 and I did not drive so the help into town would be fantastic . We will be anle to give you at least 4 or 5 days notice. Sara & Dan

garrydymond 3 Oct 2012 00:34

That should be fine. PM me if possible as I sometimes miss post.

saralou 3 Oct 2012 14:24

well thursday then

UGH the dealer did not order the tires when we asked so another delay until they arrive today! that means we will not get to Del Rio until thursday now. Sara

WilderRider 3 Oct 2012 20:52

Welcome to the journey. I crossed the border in NM about 10 days ago so I am a little ahead of you. In Guanajuato now. I have not met any over landers yet, but I keep hoping I will to. I am moving further south tomorrow, but feel free to holler if we ever get close. So far I would recommend at least Zacatecas and GTO. The Festival cervantino starts today and goes for about 3 weeks. Looks like fun.

saralou 3 Oct 2012 20:58

Thanks for the info keep us posted on your local . We will for sure be in Oaxaca oct 27 for 1 week. Sara

Will do. I am certainly making my way to Oaxaca. Plan to spend some time there.

Horrific service Houston BMW

Well we are " still headed" to Mexico. After a two day ORDEAL at Gulf Coast BMW . Do not go there when in Texas they are totally incompetent . Locals in San Antonio said the only reliable service in the state is on Austin. Advice too late for us! Headed for Monclova in the morning!!!!!

southboundmoto 5 Oct 2012 04:04

Have fun!
My buddy and I will be crossing the border at the end of the month, maybe see you on the road beer

John Downs 5 Oct 2012 04:09

I was reading this ride report of some nice roads south of Monclova that a couple fellows were riding two days ago.

You have to scroll towards the bottom of the page on this ride report:

Round the World on a ThumperÂ…Adventure before Dementia - Page 17 - ADVrider

You and your hubby might enjoy cranking through the mountains and canyons on those roads southeast of Saltillo. I know I'll be checking them out in a couple weeks when I head down.

Have fun!

Best,
John Downs

saralou 5 Oct 2012 04:10

Sounds great!

saralou 5 Oct 2012 04:12

Thanks John

We sure will thanks!!! sp

Made it to Puerto Escondido. Hot along the coast. Hope the trip does actually get started for you soon.

saralou 9 Oct 2012 15:27

Mexico

We did finally make it and without any trouble at the border or with bike importation. We were in Monclova then a few days in Saltillo. We are now in Zacatecas, which is amazing and cooler at 26 ish compared to 38 on the way south. I was in Puerto Escondido in 1991 im sure it has changed. ride safe. Sara

I'm downright envious of your trip and daydreaming of my own trip in 2010. You'll love Oaxaca, make sure to explore the rather extensive pedestrian area downtown. Taxco, albeit somewhat touristy, was also quite nice, and San Miguel de Allende is great. All those places are also at fairly high altitude so you'll experience much better temperatures. Mexico is an amazing country with amazing people and amazing sites. I hope you get to take your time through Central America as well. It's also full of wonderful people and sights. My biggest regret on the trip was that I was too rushed on the way back and never made it into Mexico City where I'd been invited by the Diamonds.

Travelling vicariously through and reminiscing reminiscing in my rocking chair ...poetic licence employed ;-)

...almost forgot. San Cristobal de Las Casas was pretty neat as well. Especially if you can hit it during a festival weekend. I was fortunate to be there during Easter Weekend. An endless sea of Mexican families and the occasional gringo.

Thanks

Michelle
We appreciate you advice so much! We have changed our plans to include Allende for sure. The Diamonds are very kind to invite us as well. I was last in Mexico City, Oaxaca, and San Cristobal in 1991 so I'm sure they has changed. Cooler would be nice as we had 38 on the way to Saltillo. Please follow us on Hu ride report or our web site as we would love any further help and hints from someone with your experience. I hear from home you guys are enjoying a spectacular fall so far. My sister in Squamish said it was 29 for Thanksgiving.

Yup! record breaking dry spell in Victoria. No precipitation to speak off since August 1st. But based on our miserable spring and early summer, it's just about "normal" when averaged out :-) Lots of amazing riding weather, and by some strange cosmic coincidence I've also been unemployed since August 2nd. Just this past Wednesday I went to Vancouver and hiked to Norvan Falls in spectacular, perfect hiking weather.

But the rains are forecast to finally come around this Friday. Just in time for going back to school for the winter. Is there really a god for outdoorsy biker types after all? :-)

I'll check in to your blog now and then when I can tear myself away from Trigonometry, Calculus, multiphase electrical systems, Canadian Electrical Code, etc. I'd be happy to offer advice based on my personal experiences if you're open to that.

very open

we would LOVE advice thanks so much

Mexico NOT what you expect

Well like most of you we were told by everyone we met on the way from Vancouver to the North and then south that Mexico is very dangerous. That we would be robbed, killed, ripped off and hassled.

Im glad to tell you that all those predictions have so far been completely wrong. The zone north of Zacatecas I will admit is a bit more intimidating with the military presence, but not too scary.

The people here have been kind and very friendly. We have managed with our pretty pathetic Spanish with out too much trouble.

It is really worth the trip.

Sara

I was think of bypassing Mexico City on my way down to SA. Is your offer good for a Chinese biker too?:D

garrydymond 20 Oct 2012 19:25

I don't see why we wouldn't let a Chinese Biker stay. Just send me a PM and we'll fix it up.

jamesyeiser 20 Oct 2012 23:57

There are three of us getting tires put on now and trying to cross tecate in a day or two. We just are looking to get our insurance thing figured out today or tomorrow and start heading south. We will use the ferry in the bottom of the baja and cross over to Mazatlan. Maybe we can meet up down there somewhere

saralou 24 Oct 2012 00:59

You can buy the insurance on line best price was mexpro.

We would love to meet up. We try to keep our current location on our website worldwideride.ca or you can contact us there. We are meeting some other bikers in Oaxaca this weekend. Sara

cpaulson 24 Oct 2012 01:39

Well say hey to Deb.

I would love to meet up but from your schedule it seems like it might only happen on my way back. I am about to head over to Guatemala for a while. Enjoy Oaxaca. I sure did.
