Eastern route?

Hi,
I'm doing the same on an LC4 in Sept only taking the western route. It seems as though most people are taking the eastern. Is there something about the western route that I'm not aware of? Getting me a bit worried there for a second.

East route gives greater variety in cultures, landscapes, weather. Gives you the option to include the Middle east. East route has more touristy stuff to do eg Egypt sights, Serengeti, vic falls whereas west africa has...mmm...none of these. Western route has more border crossings which increases your risk of general hassle. Historically greater risk of spontaneous eruptions of civil unrest on the west route. Well thats our reasons for going East anyway. Each to their own.

The carnet (Egypt 800%) reason is not a very strong one as you can easily get a bank guarantee at the fraction of the cost of the surety route.

I'm in the fairly early planning stages (making your departure date a touch early for me) of a ride from UK to SA, eastern side too, on a KTM 640. Your list of resources & hints/tips is awesome, thanks.

...
Cheers

Hey Mark -

If you're interested in expanding your posse by another KTM rider from London - please get in touch...

I've been threatening to do this trip for yonks... and if you're not leaving in the next month or so, maybe we can do at least part of it together??

I see. I Guess it's just that I had my share of the Middle East and it's not an attraction for me anymore. But then of course as you mentioned, there is east Africa. Enjoy your trip immensely, and stay cold.

Hi

Good to hear. I can't send you a PM as I haven't submitted enough posts but it'd be good to hear what stage of prep you're at and what your plans are so far.

I'm still in the thick of planning & organisation so not leaving for at least two months

Cheers
