En route through Egypt/Sudan/Ethiopia...

Just checking in if anyone else is currently en route through to Sudan/Ethiopia from Egypt - to share the bike pushing through the sands of the Nubian desert?

cheers.

Hi

I'm on my way to Sudan - currently I'm in Sharm al Sheik for some enduro warm up with local KTM offroad shop (even though I ride GS1150). I plan to get on ferry in Asuan in two weeks. Tomorrow I will start in direction of St. Katherine and the day after tomorrow I would like to be in Cairo (1-days) and then I want to head to Western Desert.

What are your plans?

Cheers

Martin

Hi, myself and 5 friends will be landing in Cairo on 2 November. Our bikes (KTM 640)are waiting in customs at Cairo airport. If all goes well we should be in Aswan by next Saturday. The plan is to ride to cape town via Suda, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique etc. I am sure we will see each other at some stage.

stay on 2

In Cairo at the moment, but will leave Sunday for Luxor and Aswan via western oasis. Aiming to be on the 7 Nov boat and, in sh'Allah, be in Khartoum by 13 Nov.

It seems like there'll be a whole herd of us on the same ship.

Though i'll probably see the multitude of bikes on the boat, i'll likely be staying at Happy land Hotel in Luxor (3-4 Nov) and either at Adam's Camp or Nunian Oasis Hotel in Aswan (5-6 Nov) if you want to bump into one another any earlier.

Safe riding and enjoy Cairo traffik!

cheers,
Lach

Hi

I've got stuck in Dahab - I've lost one of the screws holding the rear wheel and the whole wheel got loose during my offroad trip to St. Katherine. Therefore I have to wait for replacements in Dahab and will not make it to Asuan for the ferry on November 7th. I will try to catch one the week after.

Maybe I will catch up with you somewhere down south.

Good luck

Martin

Hi Guys, I'm in Khartoum at the moment leaving tomorrow thru Ethiopia etc, etc. A few tips, in Luxor highly reccomend staying at the west bank hotel al-gezira you would not belive how good it is 'cos Luxor itself is a mega dump but only a 5 min ferry ride away. The ferry from Aswan is a very much hit and miss affair, the bikes go an a barge which arrives later, at least one day later and space is very limited so push hard. Mr Idris is the man, mob: 002106845201, an Egyption Del boy only slightly more efficient. The Nile route I found very hard work but I am a whimp and the 2 super heroes that kept picking me up and digging me out had a whale of a time. Be advised that the Nile route through Egypt is convoy only, sometimes wacky races other times quite funerial but always hard to plan. See you all for a beer later. Ride safe, Mike

Hope that piece of junk holds together down the Nile route! My 640 is still for sale if it gets too hard in the sand!

cheers

Hi

I've got delayed by technical problems and waiting for spare parts in Dahab. I will leave tomorrow from Cairo via Western Desert towards Asuan - want to catch ferry next monday 21.11. My Sudanese visa (that I've extended in Cairo) is valid only till 22.11 - so I really need to go next Monday. Is there a real possibility that the ferry will not go? What is it depended on - number of passengers or something else?

Thanks for advice.

hi all
i'm in khartoum at the moment. i've come through ethiopia, kenya, etc. if anybody wants some info, see me at blue nile sailing club, i'm probably going to stay for a couple of days.
i'm also looking for some info on the dongola - wadi halfa 'road'. perhaps we can meet in khartoum & swop notes.

Hi BM, Khartoum to Dongalla no real problems but beware of some mga potholes after Omdurman. Lord's hotel in Dongolla is very basic but has a 5* manager/owner. The nile route is very very sandy but you can find some brilliant bivi sites in the desert. Fuel can be a problem so do not pass a gas station and carry lots of water though the water buts in the villages are really cool and seem clean but a puri tab would not go amiss. Blue Nile hotel in Wadi Halfa is really basic so unless you are sand happy don't get there too early, good hotel tip, Al Gerzira on Luxor's west bank, the best value hotel you could wish for. Ride safe, Mike

Hi guys,
in Nairobi at the moment. Spent the day servicing bikes and buying more tubes - rusted nails are a pain. Trip so far has been safe with no serious problems at all. Sleeping in the weirdest of places and diet has gone for a ball...Border crossings been a breeze so far. Will be heading south to Dar tomorrow. From there via Mozambique to Cape town. www.101trails.com will have daily location updates if anybody wants to meet up.

cheers
