Carnet info for Ecuador and South america. Partner!
 

Just how needed are they. I am having a difficult time finding one as my bike is registered here in Costa Rica.
I am planning to head south in January to The end of the continent on an XT600.

Carnets are not needed at all in South America.

Make sure you have Ricardo Rocco's latest advice on getting (flying) into Ecuador hassle free. The rest of the borders are very simple - much easier (and cheaper) than Central America. There is lots of information on this bulletin board - search away!....

I live in Medellin, Colombia.

Colombia requires insurance on your bike along with a vest displaying your license plate number. In addition the plate number must displayed on the back of your helmet. A foreign bike might be able to avoid the above rules, but it's best to be aware of the law when stopped by the local military or police.

As chance would have it I logged in to the HUBB today and saw your message. You won't be surprised to learn that I didn't actively seek insurance for Colombia. I've just checked my diary but I didn't note whether or not it was compulsory at the border when I rode in from Ecuador. I wouldn't have sought it if it wasn't compulsory.
