Thanks.

Tdf

Hi Guys/Gals...

I am flying my KTM from LA to Santiago Dec 16th and heading south and around SA some. I would surely welcome meeting others on the road.

If any of you gusy thinking of flying your bike from US west coast need info I can help. I am using Chile LAN Cargo to fly bike on a pallet. It has been easy arranging so far... you must have a "dangerous goods" certificate which is obtained from 3A packing near airport. They build my pallet also and deliver to LAN Cargo for me too...

Looking forward to seeing some of you out there.. currently in Baja waiting for some good wind for kiteboarding and hoping to kite some in SA..

Ciao!

:thumbup1: Sounds like total fun, but I saw the post too late!

Hows the trip coming? I live in Canada and was thinking of doing a ride from Canada to Argentina. How are you planning to deal with the Darein Gap? Boat/Plane or cross it? Not heard much updated info in a few years, as I was in the sportbike world. But now I wanna get into adventure travelling, as I have always had my heart there. Let me know, sounds like a great Ride.
Those doing this, what bikes are you using?????

vagamoto 7 Mar 2008 01:53

Zipolite, Mexico

The journey proceeds at a leisurely pace, I have been in Mexico for a month, and will be here until April. This is a totally amazing country, worth spending a lot of time here. Check my website for the photographs etc. Riding around the world - David Collett, a liberating journey by bike..
The bikes I have seen are all BMW 650's and KLR 650's. Both seem to be good, the one a lot more expensive than the other.

Central Highlands of Mexico heading South 15 March

Been on the road 13 days from San Fran. Baja, Mazatlan, Durrango, Zacatecas to Real de Cotorse. Been in touch with Dirt Girl and hope to meet in Yucatan.
Any one else in the area, it would be great to get in touch.
Got clipped by a car in the big city of Zacetecas doing a u turn and heared about 4 cops shot in Durrango but people and trip so far have been amazing!
BTW this place Real de Catorse is stunning, you have to take a 2 km tunnel by donkey and cart to get to it( got to ride in after dark though)

If you are passing through before that, let me know and I have a garage and spare rooms.

Riding South

Hey David, (and everybody else).
I will be leaving California on about July 1st. First stop is the meeting in Silverton where I am hoping to get some last minute tips, as well as it providing a good chance for a shakedown ride. I've got a BMW GS 650. I plan on leaving Colorado and going down into Mexico. I want to stop in Oaxaca for about a month and study spanish. I have a good place to stay there with friends. Then I want to go down to Guatemala and do the same thing, about a month there studying spanish. Next to Costa Rica to do the same thing. By then I expect it to be early winter, (December 1 or so) and I plan on storing the bike wherever I am and catching a plane to New Zealand, buying a bike in Wellington or Christchurch, and riding both islands for a couple of months. Then sell the bike and get back to South America. Ride down through Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia and into Argentina. I have been there a couple of times before and plane on eventually settling down someone there. I particularly like Bariloche and the surrounding area.
So that is the plan, but it could change if things look better from another perspective. I would sure like to ride with someone, or some someones for at least part of the trip.

charapashanperu 28 Mar 2008 19:35

Rich,

Lets keep in touch. I will be back in Peru in June 2009 leading a group of off-roader friends on a 5,000 km loop within the country. If you are thinking of settling somewhere in SA, let me talk you into Peru! :thumbup1: Have lived on and off there for some 30 years and LOVE IT !!

A great little settling point to visit is Chachapoyas, Peru where the 3rd highest waterfall in the world is

In Guatemala, learning Spanish

Finally got here after 3 months on the road. Mexico was fantastic in every way, had a really great time, saw lots, enjoyed every minute. Did 10 000 km. Now in San Pedro on Lago Atitlan, plan to study Spanish for 4 - 6 weeks. Then will head south again. Anyone keen to join me after 20 May?

vagamoto 20 Jun 2008 15:16

In Nicaragua, heading for South America

The journey continues. Currently in Granada, nicaragua, riding with Dirtgirl and Mojo. Heading to Costa Rica and Panama. So far the roads, traffic and border crossings have all been a hug surprise: far better and easier than expected. Just the cops in Nica are a pain: have been stopped 7 times, usually for no identifiable reason. Seems they want a bribe, but Dirtgirl is adamant: no money without a citation. so we always get to ride on when the cops give up!
Man its hot here: over 90 most days and nights. And 80% humidity.
Is anyone close by to meet up and swap stories?

Zigeuner53 21 Jun 2008 18:59

In Sta Elena

Hey Jim, I´ll sure stop by to chat. What are your plans going south? When do you expect to cross to Colombia?

BoulderGeek 30 Jun 2008 09:09

This thread is good motivation. :thumbup1:

Great to see how travellers can link up through the HUBB and link together amazing travel opportunities.

Just wanted to wish you well. I'm sitting at the South Pole, trapped in the station as a winter-over. It's -93F with -123F windchill, and dark, dark, dark.

I'm a former R100GSPD owner, and looking to do Mexico, Central America and potentially South America in 2009. I was fortunate to attend the Travellers Meeting in Colorado in 2005, and meet some great HU peeps.

Wishing you all great motoring from the South Pole!

charapashanperu 30 Jun 2008 13:05

Too cold for me!!!

Mike (bouldergeek),

How's your "summer" going? Even up here in Maine it is a boiling +70 degrees! But the cold down there (now that REALLY should be called "the land down under"!) has not dampened your spirits for another trip. Good for you!

If you are down Peru way next summer, about 15 of us XR types will be doing a challenging 5,000 km within Peru trying to stay away from pavement. We will be 35 days on the "road", starting and ending in Cuzco. You (having been a KLR guy yourself...we will ignore the BMW "stain" on your past.:oops2:...) are very welcome to join us...

You know I will hear grief over that little BMW "jab" ?c?. to tell the truth, I have already been salivating over the new 800cc BMW is bringing out in the fall..... But if you want to know the type of routes we will be taking next summer, check out the threads:http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...ils-goat-34466
and: http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...ontinued-34801

I live in Panama and will be leaving for TDF in early September. Happy to ride part of it with someone if the timing works out. Also, feel free to drop me a line at biker@Bannerconsult.com and let me know when you'll be in Panama City. Let's have a beer and compare notes.

Wow!, It sounds like the bike does not need to be completely enclosed in a crate? I'm planning on shipping my bike on LAN Cargo out of Miami in two weeks and have been planning on building a large expensive difficult completely enclosed crate. You may have saved me a lot of trouble.
