Belize, Guatemala from the USA after New Years

Hello everyone,

Planning to head south from Wisconsin for Guatemala after New Years. I am open as far as the route is concerned. I will ride my KTM 640 Adventure so I won't be a speed demon. I will truck the bike until it's warm enough to ride it.

I am an experienced motorcycle traveler(done a RTW trip a couple of years ago). I am an experienced mechanic and a Registered Nurse.

Anyone headed south in that time frame?
bill

Hi Bill,
I will be heading south from LA to Argentina at the end of January, while this may be a bit late to catch up at the start of the trip I may see you on the road further south. Stay safe, happy travels!!!

I'm in Central Mexico at the moment and might be in southern Mexico just after new years, could hook up for some days riding

dzguy 2 Dec 2010 23:36

Curious about the length of your trip. Gonna have to ask for a certain amount of time off.:scooter:

Bill Shockley 3 Dec 2010 05:49

Guys,
Had a moment of wavering but I am back and solid. I was thinking about switching to the Baja but I want to see the Tikal ruins in the jungle and kayak in Belize on the Caribbean. It's a must.

I plan on 2-3 months on the round trip.

The bad part for me is that the big single KTM likes to run around 60-65 mph so I am a little slow.

Just looking at maps I think I'd follow the coast from Brownsville to Vera Cruz and then head inland for Chipas and south but I am open.

I was around Cozumel and Cancun before they became major tourist stops so I will avoid them. Mexico has some big inland lakes I'd like to see and the Tikal ruins(Flores) and the Belize Islands and coastal area.

It's all gonna be good.

My cell phone number is 715 966 2001.

DZ guy I will call or call me.

Here's a picture of me showing what a harmless idiot I am(with a couple of broken ribs, in mongolia three years ago).

Hey Fred, I am with a Ukrainian, Valarii Kryshen, (on a RTW trip) and a German Ulli and we are in San Jose, Costa Rica and we are heading to Cangreja only 30 KM southeast tomorrow. Eventually, we'll get to Panama. :thumbup1:

Are you in the area?

olyflyer 2 Feb 2011 04:46

damn you guys travel fast! I'll be in Antigua next week prob Tuesday or Wednesday

fredstr 2 Feb 2011 14:41

Hey Damon,

Yes, our pace is a bit fast but hope to make time to spend in Costa Rica and here in Nicaragua.

Be cautions in Honduras. So far the most challenging borders. We got stopped 3 time and they tried to get money out of us but played stupid and called there bluff. There was another 3 check points that we got through by either staying tight to a semi or waving and playing stupid.

I highly recommend using the eastern crossing not the main ones along the west coast.

Keep in touch and maybe we will run and hook up on the way up.

fredstr 13 Feb 2011 11:34

Valarii,

Sorry I missed you response. We are in Panama City and heading to the Darrien today. Then back up to Boco Del Toro and should be there in the next couple of days. Hope you trip is going well. Drive safe.

Fred, I am going to be in Bocas del Toro today. I hope to see you there.
I rode for two weeks with Valarii Kryshen.
My WEE Strom is waiting in Boquete for a new charging system (coming from San Jose, CR.
I am sad about that so maybe a visit will cheer me up.
I'll be in Bocas for a few days. LMK where you are and maybe we'll meet.

Dan

fredstr 16 Feb 2011 22:16

Hey Dan,

We got into Bocas yesterday and are staying at the Seahorse (or Hippocampo) hotel across form the Bonavista Bar and Grill. If you get this today, we will met you at the Bonavista around 9pm today. Larry has glasses and grey hair, I have glasses and short brown hair and we will be drinking Balboas.

Tomorrow morning, we are heading out and will be crossing into Costa Rica. Sorry to hear about the bike but at least you can get it repaired.

Hope to see ya!

Hey Fred and Larry, It was really great talking to you two adventurers this morning, here in Bocas del Toro. You guys are the best...
Good luck on that northern Costa Rica to Nicaragua crossing with the boat.
Looking forward to a report on that.

fredstr 25 Feb 2011 03:29

Hello Dan,
Where you at? The trip up the Rio Frio was great. No problems and it did help that we had insurance already. Was a little concerned with loading the bikes on the boat as our bikes are wider then the boat. Quite the sight, half the front tire and half the rear hanging over the edge of the boat.

We are in Los Naranjos, Honduras how and will be heading to the east cost tomorrow. Hope the bike is on the road.

Digiamo 25 Feb 2011 22:46

Broke bike in Boquete, Panama

Hey Fred, Glad you guys are having fun. I am still waiting for parts, (Stator and Rect.) here in Boquete, Panama. I am at the Hostal Baru, room 3 if anyone want to come visit.
I could be another week before these things come in from San Jose, Costa Rica.

Any and all, come see beautiful Boquete.

I still hope to catch up with you guys on your northbound ride through Mexico. as It's looking like the Cancun thing is not going to happen.

It was great seeing you guys in Bocas del Toro. Stay in touch as I am going stir crazy here.
