Belem, Manaus and Colombia via Venezuela

My bike is in Belem. I will be there mid January and heading to Manaus via the river and then north and into Venezuela and onward. This will be my 5th year travelling 3 months a year in SA. Anyone heading that way?

Be interested in hearing how you get on in Venezuela. I haven't heard of any overland riders there in a while. For one thing, the border with Colombia was closed for a long time--is it now open? For another, Americans, at least, are no longer admitted.

I rode through the Guianas, then into Venezuela along the route you're planning and out through Colombia about 8 years ago, before things got desperate. Nice country, lots to see, only minor corruption and crime (from my perspective). I hope you'll post an updated viewpoint.

Border is still closed between Colombia and Venezula for vehicles.
You have the option of crossing illegally, but that comes with its own risks.

I know a lot of Venezuelans as I live in Colombia, most tell me to avoid the place right now due to the ongoing issues etc.

Venezuela is a no- go, at the moment.
You will be robbed in an hour.

That's what I kept hearing before going there myself. In the end, no robberies, head still attached to neck, all systems still functional. In fact, I've heard that dozens of times about all sorts of places, so.....Djimny, do you have any direct experience to describe, or are you just saying what people always seem to say?

I talked to a few people coming from Venezuela.
So, i do not have real evidence, but more heard this from first hand.

But, everyone has to decide himselfs.

Can you describe what those few people actually said? Were they robbed? Robbed within the hour? Threatened with robbery?

I agree that everyone has to decide for themselves. However it's helpful to have solid information before deciding. "You will be robbed within the hour" isn't very solid, nor very helpful....unless your contacts actually had this happen, in which case it's definitely helpful to say so.

best,

Mark

I think he was trying to make a point. It's a dangerous place right now.

YMMV in Venezuela...
