Barcelona to Morocco September 2019
Hi everyone,
I will be heading from Barcelona to Morocco in September, approx. 2 week trip, possibly ferry directly from Barcelona to Tangier (24 hrs) or else ride down to Algeciras / Tarifa and take one of the much shorter crossings from there. Dates not set in stone yet, but will be September. Definitely not August, but its possible that early Oct could work out. Done plenty of touring on the roads, solo and in groups, but not cut my teeth on ADV touring yet, which is the entire point of this trip, to test me, bike and gear in an 'off-grid' location, in the heat, and venturing off the tarmac. I will be riding a Triumph Tiger 800 XCa and hence wont be doing any dune jumping! [queue all the guys telling me I need 100 litres of fuel and at least 800km range :-/] Yes, I have a 19 litre tank, which is good for 500km range. I will be travelling fairly light, as light as possible anyway, no tent, no camping gear, no spare tyres, no sun lounger etc. etc. Without a doubt, cheap hotels will be plentiful, hence I plan to stay in hotels and avoid camping for numerous reasons that I wont bother to list here. Plan is to avoid the big cities, probably swerve past Marrakesh and Fez completely and aim to spend most the time further south. I have done plenty of riding alone, but everyone tells me its best to team up in ADV land and when off grid in Morocco, hence wondering if anyone might be planning to be there at the same time? peace-out Phil |

Expect to pay attendants to park in quite a few cities. Several interesting roads over the Atlas mountains. Taroudant to Marrakech, Marrakech to Ouazazate, Ouazazate to Demnat were all interesting. Also recomment the road along the Mediterannean Coast from Tetouan to El Jebha. I only went that far, probably good past there too. Great twisty road along the hills and cliffs. You needn't be concerned about fuel availability. Petrol stations all over. In the unlikely event of an emergency you'll find a local selling petrol from a barrel - at an inflated price.
Of course a companion is recommended on a secluded piste. It easy to take a tumble or get mired in some difficult terrain. Lots of sandy pistes in the south. But no reason not to venture out alone if you select the pistes according to your tyres, riding ability, size/weight of your bike and the weather conditions. Plenty of pistes can be tackled even on road tyres if the weather is dry. Chris Scott's book is a great reference for piste research. (And if you never leave the tarmac Maroc is still a fab riding destination.) |
Hi i went there last year for two weeks on honda 250 rally one of my friends on a tenere, 1500 miles off road 500 miles on road, some of the off road trails i would not atempt on your bike but there are so many to do. in the south desert crossings no problem for your bike, (keep off the dunes on your bike) i was a bit unlucky in desert got free puntures in one day not nice repair in 45 degrees heat, ( nobody else got puntures on entire trip ) just fill up when you see fuel stations, and when you want somewhere to stay just use google, we stayed in some great value for money hotels. ( even one hotel that had over 500 rooms and we were the only ones in it,) so many friendly people, and a big differents in scenery from north to south very cheap go for it

update: planning to take the boat from Algeciras to Tan Med on the 1st or 2nd Sept, travelling alone so far...

Hi Phil - probably not but would not rule out next Spring given a bit of notice
