Is there any chance you could give a breakdown of your estimated daily expenses while travelling through the U.S. I am in the mist of planning a similar trip, however my daily budget is considerably higher. Just curious how you got it down to $40 per day, when I did my calculations I was about $75/day to travel in the U.S.

Can you let me know how many miles you plan on average per day, est. meal costs, lodging, etc...

Thanks

Thanks for the response - I see where the differences are now. I will be riding a V-Strom 1000 and have estimated $20 for fuel per day (approx. 300 miles) I only get about 40 mpg. I too had estimated about $15 per day for food, however I had planned on spending about $40 a night for a motel or decent camp ground, perhaps this is a little on the high side.

$40 is definitely not too much for a cheap hotel, but it is steep for a campground. Lots of camping can be had free, if you're trying to budget. It just depends on whether you need services (power, bathrooms, showers, water) or not.

Don't forget to budget for repairs, parts, consumables including tires, splurges....not to mention beer and/or Jack Daniels. On a long trip, you will need tires--my current journey has involved 6 rear and 4 front.

Etc.
