Alaska July-August 2011?

Anyone planning to roll through Fort Nelson, British Columbia, Canada (Mile 300 Alaska Highway) to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska in July - August 2011?

If so, I'd like to join the ride.

I'm an experienced moto traveler (Western Canada, US, Alaska, Mexico & Central America). I usually ride solo, but I live in the north and I know that traveling solo to Prudhoe is not a good idea given the sparse population, rough roads and unpredictable, possibly extreme, weather conditions along the way.

Sooo, if you're making plans to go to Prudhoe this summer and wouldn't mind a riding partner, please contact me at: tsiyah@hotmail.com. You can also read about my travels so far at: Lowerider: Life's a Journey...Enjoy the Ride. :mchappy:

HI

Unfortunately we will already be on our way south from prudhoe bay at that time. But as we're going towards Vancouver and Seattle early july, we might have a chance to see you on the road going north... Or just stop for a coffe

Hi!

Thanks for your reply! Email me when you're in the neighbourhood; if we don't meet on the road, we can meet for coffee in Fort Nelson!

Safe travels!

Possible meet

hey lowerider. im gonna be in the neighbourhood around that time. im flying to jersey to my girlfriend's place in april, buy a bike, probably a nearly new klr, gonna tour the states for a couple of months and then head north through british columbia, the yukon and on to prudhoe bay. shes in college so ill be travelling alone up north so it would be cool to meet up as im planning on camping for as much as possible. no definite timetable as yet apart from my arrival date in jersey but i'll be able to make it up as i go along.

I'll ride from Montreal to Prudhoe Bay at this time. I'm a solo rider too and make long legs (usually 1000 km / day but I may slack a bit while being in Alaska). My plans are to leave Montreal around June 25th and I'm planning to arrive in Fairbanks around the 1rst of July. The dates may drift 1 week (departure July 2nd). We could make the segment from Fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay and back together if you wish. When I come back to Fairbanks, I plan to go to Inuvik.

I will drive my R100GS (preparing it for the trip right now) and I plan to camp if weather is good.

I have never been to Alaska yet but I have done James Bay and Labrador with my sidecar (my dog Choubaka will stay home this time. Yes, I know, we are both smiling on this picture).

Hey Fred. Love the pic :biggrin3:. Im still in the early stages of planning my trip but i'm definitely aiming to head up to Alaska around that time. It's mostly gonna be a make it up as you go along type trip but it'll be cool to have a couple of firm dates to plan things around. We can keep in contact in between and see how things pan out. I'm in the process of applying for the extended tourist visa and working out budgets, etc. In your experience what's a realistic daily budget for travelling up north, camping as much as possible?

Hi Keith,

If weather is OK, camping is not expensive: around 15-20 $ for a tent. Hotels are not cheap in Alaska (generally between 125 and 200$) so you must hope weather will be fine. There are a lot of free camping spots with no service along different highways. I'm planning to spend a few nights in hotels depending of the weather.
Considering my road planning (1000 km /day), the last thing I want to do at the end of a rainy day is to sleep in my wet tent...

Keith46 18 Jan 2011 22:53

Yeah i hear you. Fingers crossed for good weather :Beach:. Dunno if i could keep up with that sort of mileage but if we're on the road at the same time we could definitely meet up and talk bikes and dogs. Our jack russell is called fred too funnily enough lol. Short for Freddie Spencer....

Hi Keith,
Us two brits arrive in NY on the 4th April , bum around for a bit and pick up the bikes from Baltimore around the 17th . Just going to ride the Top of the world highway , weather permitting and we have to be back in Seattle for around the 1st June ready for our bikes to be shipped to Russia , If your around keep in touch and maybe a ride around and a few beers !!
Pity it was'nt a bit later we could have met up with the others palica ( brilliant pic ) kyrnos and lowrider

I'll be going up toward Prudhoe Bay around that time, but at the moment I'm in Colombia – so can't give any definite timings. But I'm aiming to be in Prudhoe Bay around mid-July.

yellowbirdrs 20 Jan 2011 05:54

Nice pics of the Dalton HWY ...... blessed are the makers of heated Jackets and grips :thumbup1:.

Keith46 21 Jan 2011 08:26

Nice pics. Suddenly camping up there doesn't seem so attractive :biggrin3:. Looks like there's gonna be plenty of company on the road at that time of year. Bushman-uk, i'll definitely keep in touch. Im still in the middle of planning my route but it sounds like we're thinking along similar lines. I'll post it as soon as i get my act together. Im a procrastinator :tongue_smilie:.

Traffic!

I'll be up there a bit later than you guys, aiming to hit Prudhoe Bay in the first week of August, but might we might still cross paths at some point.

I hadn't fully realised how cold it was going to be... those photos look very similar to mine in the Alps right before I got caught in a snow storm and ended up on my ass doh Already got the heated grips but suddenly that heated jacket is looking like a great investment!

Fred, you have an awesome dog!

Alaska

I'm in New Zealand now and will continue to Australia next month. My flight back to USA is on June 4. I would like to leave for Alaska some in mid-to-late June. Want to stop briefly in BC to have my HID lights repaired.

I'm finding NZ MUCH more expensive than I expected. Hope I'll have enough money left by June to go to Alaska and would like to return to South America in the Fall of this year.

UKbri 31 Mar 2011 22:16

Hey Lowerider

I fly to Calgary on May 11th, head south, (grand Canyon etc) then North to Dawsons Creek, Alaskan highway, Klondike loop and up to Prudhoe. No definate dates just gonna go with the flow and take it all in. Sounds like there is plenty of riders in the area at that time. Planning on doing it all on the cheap so free camp as much as possible but im not keen on freezin me nuts off!
Hopefully see you all on the road for a beverage or 3 beer

KevOK 2 Apr 2011 08:24

Hey Guys,

I should be heading up that way mid July- August as well, sounds like we should all meet up for a beer some place.beer

Alaska

Planning to leave from Los Angeles sometime in late June/early July. My thinking right now is to go to the Calgary Stampede, which is 8-17 July, then continue on to Alaska and stop by Vancouver on the way back south. Alternatively, I could go straight north to Prudhoe Bay, then to Calgary in time for the Stampede. I don't plan to be at Stampede for the whole time. I'm basing my planning on the following weather records:
Avg.High Avg.Low Avg.Precip
Calgary
June ]69.0 °F 45.0 °F 3.00 in
[July 74.0 °F 49.0 °F 2.80 in
Aug 73.0 °F 48.0 °F 1.90 in
Fairbanks
June 71.0 °F 47.0 °F 1.68 in
July 73.0 °F 50.0 °F 1.96 in
Aug 67.0 °F 45.0 °F 1.95 in
Prudhoe Bay
June 44.0 °F 31.0 °F 0.37 in
July 54.0 °F 37.0 °F 0.72 in
Aug 51.0 °F 36.0 °F 0.95 in

Any suggestions/recommendations?

Hello everyone! Thank you all for responding and for sharing your great photos!! It sounds like you all have great journeys planned! Even if we can't travel together, it would be nice to meet up while you're in Fort Nelson, call me: 250-500-1782 if you're up for a drink. bier

I have confirmed my departure date: Leave Fort Nelson after work (4:30) on Friday August 12; head north to Muncho or Liard Hot Springs (4hrs) spend the night and then head to Prudhoe Bay! After Prudhoe, head south to Vancouver Island, either via the Alaska Marine Highway or the Cassier Hwy to Prince Rupert ferry then down to Victoria, BC. I'm parking the bike in Victoria and flying back to Fort Nelson; need to back at work Sept 6.

If this schedule works for you (and you don't mind traveling with chihuahua) please call me or email me at: tsiyah@hotmail.com.

Going North from Vancouver Island in a few days

Hi,

I'm in Victoria/Vancouver Island at the moment, visiting friends. This coming week (Tue/Wed), I'll leave the island and head up North – probably as fast as I can, with long riding days, but still trying to see a few things & take some "pretty piccys" :)
On the way back South from Prudhoe Bay via Jasper/Glacier NP, I'll take things a bit more relaxed give myself a bit more time. Maybe even do the Dempster, weather permitting.

I'd like to get up to Fairbanks ASAP – to have the option for some extended touring & exploring for a while if the weather is good & I don't get fed up with the mosquitoes :mchappy:

@Lowerider: My original plan was to go North via Fort Nelson – but Hwy97 is closed in both directions at Mackenzie Junction due to washouts. If conditions change, I'll contact you if you're up for drinks.

Bjorn,
if you're not adverse to taking a ferry part of the way, riding to Port Hardy at the top of the Island then taking the (fancy) ferry to Prince Rupert then heading up the Cassier Hwy to Watson Lake then Alaska would be a nice way to detour.

Bjorn 4 Jul 2011 00:38

I'll go on Cassier Hwy but won't take the ferry –*$400 is way too much & outside my budget :(

motomon 4 Jul 2011 19:41

Heading North

I will leave tomorrow from Los Angeles, so I'm well behind, but will go as quickly as possible to get to Prudhoe. I read somewhere where there are problems on 97 and that it is closed at some point. ???

Hi,

My home is in Anchorage. If you are traveling through or need a specific question answered or a part sourced out, place to stay please feel free to contact me.
Be aware that August is a 'wetter' month here. Expect some frost while traveling north of the Brooks Range. That can happen any month:thumbdown:
Been to Deadhorse twice, and while nice to have done so there are many other destinations within the state that are worthy of a visit.
Did the Arctic Circle run this past June for giggles.

Travel safely and have a GREAT time.

Alaska Trip

I'm also interested in a trip to Alaska. I live in Tampa, Florida and plan to ride to Vancouver, Canada solo. It will take me about 5-6 days to cross the country.

I'm looking for a riding partner that is Northwest of the United States or near Vancouver, Canada that wants to ride to Alaska and back. I would prefer to camp as much as possible instead of staying in a hotel each night.

I'm flexible with my time because I am self-employed. If anyone is interested, let me know.

Bjorn 7 Jul 2011 06:20

Highway 97 is open as of today, with what they call "major delays". I gess it'll get gradually better over the next few days. Check drivebc.ca for further info.

Alaska Destinations

Would love to hear of other destinations. I'm almost to Dawson Creek, BC, so expect to be there within 2-3 days.
