Africa september 2006 -companion/s needed

I'm planning a trip through Africa, using the West coast route, then across to the east via Chad. Then it's down through to Cape Town. I'm having a 600 Tenere prepared, with the usual modifications.
I want to really take my time and have as many real cultural 'experiences' on the way.
I live in Devon, England and have travelled around the world by 'plane.I'm into mountaineering, music etc.
Contact me through e-mail or on 447779063916

Of to Southern Africa on my own in July/August. Hope you have a good trip.

Hi

I'm planning a similar trip down the west coast, leaving in October 2006. The plan at the moment is to go down the west coast and then back up the east coast. I’ll probably take about 6 months, but probably longer. I’m currently living in Exeter. At the moment I’m still in the early planning stages, lots of reading.

I am going as well

Hi everyone, I am living in London at the mo but also like you all am riding to Capetown leaving around September/October, have it all planned and ready to go just saving a few more pounds to fund it all, at the mo I am on my own but I have researched all Chris Scott's Pistes in Morrocco and plan to do a few off them south to Mauritania and it would be great to have company for these parts, plan to tent it and camp as much as possible. Then onto South Africa and if I am not over it up the East Coast, at this stage I have no time line but a year or so should do it. Anyway feel free to email me for any a chat or pick my brain for plans, I think I have planned all I can at this stage and the rest will unfold.
Cheers
Robbo

Nice blog Robbo - you even have a big map!
Why are you avoiding Mozambique, Malawi and Uganda? They are some of the best countries to visit on the east coast (or so I've heard).

Good luck and if you go slow, I might even catch you up somewhere (planning similar Africa, departing October).:thumbup1:

Tully 23 Jun 2006 20:48

Hi Rob,

I like your plan to get all the way back to Oz. Been thinking of a similar thing myself. Still a long way off though as there are quite a few small trips to be done first. I've just moved to London from Oz and recently picked up a bike. Give me a yell if you're keen to do a few rides around the UK while you're preparing for your trip.

Cheers,
Tully

Just a rough direction

Hows it DKmoose, yes you are so right about those countries, the map is only a rough guide line, plan to visit all these countries if I get that far of course and especially Uganda, want to go check out the Gorillas!! If I love it I plan to spend a year or so hanging around Africa atleast but I will take it as it all comes, might be over it by the time I get to South Africa and its so far off that alot of things could change, all I know is I am leaving in about four months and can't wait, who knows might be over it by Dover with a sore arse!! I don't think so though, the route on my blog is just a rough plan of what I dream about almost every day.
So if you are leaving in October I reakon we will bump into each other, you keen to go out in the Sahara in Morocco?

dkmoose 26 Jun 2006 20:56

In your blog it says that you plan to leave in August. Has this been moved to October?

Hmmm - off road in the sahara - I do not have a lot of off-road experience. Most of my biking experience is from sports bikes. After a nasty high side at Jerez last year, I have decided to take it a bit easier.

Lois 27 Jun 2006 13:24

Me too!

Hi all,
I'm also heading down to Cape Town from the UK, leaving in October 2006, I'm riding a TTR250.
I'm going across Algeria and then down the west coast, planning on taking about 5 months. I've got a rough route outline in my website www.loisontheloose.com

Any tips, suggestions, info etc. gratefully receieved!
I'm sure we will all bump into each other at some point.
Bye for now,
Lois

Wow this thread is heating up now.

Just to let everyone know. I'm still leaving at the end of September, start of October. Currently I don't have a bike, as I killed it two months ago(long story involving a tree in the road and a car!). Any ho, I'm currently looking for a bike, but I've been toying with the idea of taking a 4x4. But... after the HU meeting at the weekend I really wanna take a bike, as the meeting had regenerated my biking passion.

So if anyone wants to meet up for a beer and a chat give me a shout and I'm sure we can arrange something.

Oh yeah, like Robboxrv I'm planning on lots of camping and doing this on the cheep so I can maybe travel further. Also if you look at Robboxrv's blog maps that’s pretty much the route I'm planning.

Take care out there people

Dakar in December 2006

Ok. I have now done it. Booked with Kudu for Paris - Dakar 11th November to 3rd December. This is for getting things started in a relatively easy fashion. Cheaper carnet, full back-up support, training etc. Someone to hold my hand make starting easier.

Then I'm on my own heading to South Africa and maybe beyond. So looking for people to join (i'm a bit scared) from Dakar heading south down west coast route around beginning of December.

Thinking of Festival au Desert in Mali beginning January 11th 2007

I will leave for west africa mid october on my own, francoise is not coming. I will go to Senegal where I have some carritative work for 3 weeks (refugy village)
So my plan is to reach Sete (near Marseille) take the boat to Nador (Morocco) and then trough the much more scenic roads of the east atlas join south of morocco (I know morocco very well).
Btw. : I am the coordinator/organiser for the Belgium meeting, so to all going south in september come and visit us the 9 th in Belgium !

bored in Mexico

So have any of you hooked up and decided to travel together as a result of this thread? I was planning to go to Africa around this time in 2007 (I don't want to wait, but I'm waiting on a couple of friends) but I'm getting antsy and want to leave sooner... and since people's plans always change I think it's risky to wait a year for these guys when they could very well bail out at the last minute.

Any insight on the fastest turn-around time in regards to showing up in the UK, getting a travelling bike, getting it titled and getting a carnet?

I don't think any of us has got together yet to chat about going to Africa. If you really want to get everything together ASAP, then the minimum time is two months. This is due to getting the carnet sorted out. Something I'm working on this week.

sohrakoff 14 Aug 2006 18:06

I'm interested in possibly starting out with one or more of you on this trip. However, if what Wild Bill says is accurate about 2 months to get crap sorted out, it would put me way behind. After getting myself to the UK or whatever European departure point, I'd have to find a bike, get it titled in my name, and get the !?#*ing carnet.

It looks like some of you are planning to start out in September, which would make things difficult. If plans have changed and you now have a later departure date, please contact me, also send a tel #, preferably landline: stevenwherever (at) yahoo (dot) com
