Africa route west in november 2021

Hi all,

I plan to drive to Cape Town via the West Coast in November / December and then either back via the East Coast or ship to Argentina.
Are there more travelers who want to go this way around this time? The nice thing about traveling is meeting other travelers, so I would be happy to hear that several people are heading this way.
I am a 36 year old woman and this will be my first real longer ttip on the bike. I already have some Africa experience because I worked / lived in malawi for 5 years

Hi Sophie,

I'm still holding out for a late December/early January 2022 departure for a west coast trip. Drop me a DM if that's of any interest.

West coast to Cape Town then onwards to S America is EXACTLY my plan, but I have grave concerns about the Corona situation not being well resolved by year's end.
Plus, I have no idea when the damned Aussie government will start allowing us out of Fortress Australia!

I’m planning Autumn/winter 2023 for this trip.
Hopefully get a half decent trip in somewhere before that.

Hi,

I'm currently riding slowly back home to Finland through Europe after spending the winter in Malta. Will visit the family and get the vaccine done.

After that the plan is to ride down to Spain (in order to be in striking distance) and keep an eye out on the corona restrictions. If it seems like the coast is clear - I will travel down the West coast to Cape Town.

My plan is to go at leisurely pace 4-6 months starting somewhere around september to november.

Hello

I plan to drive my Landy (Coddiwomple) up the west coast to Morocco and Europe at the end of this year...depending on covid. At this point I can pass into Namibia but the Angolan land border is closed, so leaving in the next month or so is pointless. My research has shown that many of the smaller countries that I plan to travel through have also closed their land borders to 'tourists'.

So my plan to travel at the end of the year is very fluid.

Hi Sophie,

I'm planning to start a trip in the beginning of November 2021 from Germany to Senegal/Gambia with my Suzuki DR350S. I cannot ride further into Africa, because I only have 5 weeks vacation. But nonetheless we could ride until there together. Of course only if we get along well. :D Or we ride just a couple of days together, then split up, and meet again a couple of days later... or whatever. I'm completely open.

From which country are you actually? According to your name it could be Germany, too... :D

I just registered here yesterday and here is my introduction:

If you are interested in riding together just PM me.

With the Delta variant making covid worse, it seems like west Africa will be a no go. Many land borders are still completely closed. While all others require very expensive covid tests (even when fully vaxxed).

Still going to keep an eye out, but might opt to ride around Europe again...

It is not an easy decision. Stay at home and wait for Wave (4-N) or start a long-term trip at the risk.

Personally we did cancelled our Silk Road start who was planned in 2021. Too a transafrica I wouldnt start. Because we dont have often the timeframe for an extened time "off". But yes, sometimes is something shorter better than nothing.

For a trans-Africa I would probably rather start in the south, i.e. in Namibia / South Africa (air freight or shipping). There, the travel radius by land is currently quite large.

In the german Wüstenschiff Forum someone did created a map a few weeks ago about open land borders. I can't say much about the accuracy, nor how much of it is already out of date.

But it shows, that you can do a lot, if you start from there.

I was hoping to do the Western route this winter, but realise that it just isn't going to be possible with COVID still - and my finances aren't where I need them to be!

However I hope to spend part of December and January in Morocco, and possibly drop down in to Mauritania. Would love to do the Railway Piste to Atar.

Will be leaving the UK end of November, to return start of February.

If anyone wants to link up, hmu.

Will be on an XT600E

Cheers, Jack.

Hey all!

Nice to see so many people going the same way. I already started my trip two months back (from Sweden) and will also be going the western route from Morocco to South Africa and then over to South America.

Would be fun to ride part of the journey with some of you guys if the plans match up. I drive a Honda CRF250L and currently I have unlimited amount of time so not sure how long I plan on taking..

I'm currently in the Balkan area atm and am planning on taking the ferry over to Morocco from Italy or Spain (depends what is open...) around October/November this year.

I'll keep you guys updated once I know any more exact dates in case some of you guys are planning on going over around the same time!

/Anton

Please keep us posted how it goes. Was going to do the same trip but decided not to, due to covid. I'm "just" riding around Europe, currently in Hungary. I couldn't even get a visa for Belarus due to covid...

Yeah will let you know how it goes!

Yeah I also wanted to enter Belarus like you but had to skip it as well sadly... I think the best currency you can have right now is time, so that hopefully you can just wait out any eventual covid delays.
