Africa in search of a good story!

Hi,

Just about to leave for Africa to do the south north route, when I decided to actually pick a topic/story and ride for/after it with a video camera (indi level). My story will take me through kind of difficult terrain, and filming alone is hard so I think it would be wiser to partner on this mission. The story does go through several countries. I do have a background in videography and currently located in the US. If there is anyone who is interested in riding, but not from a specific point to another but rather by topic/story I would love to hear from you.

David

That sounds like a grand adventure in the making. Good luck and have a safe trip! Do keep posting the rushes when you can.

south america

If you decide to try this idea in South America instead of Africa where I used to live, let me know. I currently live in Costa Rica and am hoping to do just this soon.

Cape - Cairo railway

Take the proposed route of Rhodes' Cape to Cairo railway looking at where all the ex-emperial colonies are now after how many years of independence.

Or do the same but with the Great North road

Thanks

Thanks for all the great replies.

The Rhodes idea is good, but unfortunately, I am limited by citizenship which is Israeli. Can't do Sudan and such. Also, I would like to focus on the day to day stuff. The small stuff. Subsistence, farming, water, tribalism, war & peace, foreign aid projects and for Lorraine, maybe even dogs :). Sometimes you just have to be there, feel place and the people to find an interesting story.
Hurcomb, I will be landing in S.A. in Jan and heading up to the Zambezi, hopefully through Zimbabwe. Will you be in the area, shall we talk about it?

hurcomb 24 Oct 2006 19:08

mmmmm...

i'm pretty set on leaving on the bike from london rather than putting the bike on a plane, and i finnish work in Jan, so that probably wouldn't work for me.

i'll keep an eye on this thread though and perhaps see you en route. good luck.

Bump?

I'll be leaving kinda soon so wanted to bump this up. Got buried fairly quickly.

Sorry you haven't had more response. Wish I was going to Africa at the moment, but still in Costa Rica for the next few months. If you're going to be doing stills at all, would you be interested in taking pics of domestic animals interacting with their people? If you happen to see anything. And if you're just doing video, could you do the same? I want to put yet another website up that focuses on the animal/human bond around the world...if you're interested in this kind of thing. I just did a talk in DC about this so am pretty psyched about this right now. Wouldn't pay (of course) unless at some point it got turned into a bigger project.
Enjoy the ride, no matter what your focus is!
Lorraine
PS I'll have animal photos from Santiago, Chile up on my site in a day or so, from where I had another conference last month.

Thanks!

Lorraine,
I’ll be happy to take pictures of any dogs I come across. I’m focusing on people but who knows, maybe there are great dog stories out there. If I see it, I’ll definitely film it. I myself am bonded to my wonderful female dog companion (2 overseas trips together) so man/dog companionship seems to me like a “no brainer”. I’ll be along the Zambezi not taking the usual routs or roads. Hope I don’t break down and become dinner for something. Just watched Out of Africa for the gazillionth time last night too. Maybe if I do break down, Redford will come to my rescue :).
Thanks for your support. Assaf.

I'm thinking about flying my F650D to africa mid to late January 07 and ride 4-5 months there instead of riding back to the US. The idea got to me a couple of weeks ago and just starting to look into it to it. my email is salcar at hotmail dot com

I've emailed a local agent wrt transit Visas for Libya and it seems very pricey for a solo motorcyclist so I am now looking for felow riders to share some of the cost and some of the fun too:

I'm hoping to leave Tunisia at the end of Feb 07 (Leaving London mid Feb). If anyone is interested send me a text on 07920 50 8858 and give you my mail address.

Appologies, i've just realised i'm straying off topic:innocent:
