Wheel Rims & Other Things….!

Just a quick thought, whilst putting together a plan for ATW adventure - I've got a transalp 06 model that I'm currently modifying to make fit for purpose. Looking at the rear rim - 17 x 2.50 and reading up about difficulties of getting hold of tyres for these rims in remote locations, can anyone suggest a) a suitable rim (brand) to use and b) where I can get hold of one to buy?
Am located in UK.

Also as a footnote - and apologies for sounding green, what happens re getting a bike an MOT and TAX when away from native country for years at a time…?

if you are out of the uk when your tax runs out you can either buy some more or sorn. but you must get tax when you enter the uk again if your MOT is still current or book your self into any MOT station of your choosing just before you arrive in the UK then drive straight there to be tested so you pick the nearist MOT station to your home so you can leave the bike there!


There are several threads on this matter and the DVLA is not exactly clear about it! - some would go as far as suggesting that they were being rapacious..... ;-)

Where are you planning to travel? I don't know about every continent but I do know that in Latin America the 17's are easier to find than 18" sizes. Stick with what you've got. Your bike uses a 130/17 ... but you could probably use a 120/17 or 140/17 in a pinch. A 130 is a very common size ... used on KLR's, DR650, some XR's, XT's, BMW F650 and many others. These days it's readily available in most Latin American capitals at the good shops. Not a problem. The 18" in your size ... rare, hard to find.

There are a few Transalp experts here on HUBB who've done RTW travel on that bike, know it inside out. I recommend contacting them, learn what you can about set up and prepping the bike.

If you are going places where no rear tires are available, then carry a spare on the back. Many do. The 21" front is very common, available just about anyplace tires are sold. PLAN your tire changes well ahead. KNOW how long your rear tire will last. (Usually two rears for one front) KNOW where you can find your next tire! (basic, no? doh)
