Value for money countries.

In these impending Recession-hit times, which countries still seem to offer great value for money - i found SE Asia did this but are there alternatives for staying/eating/activities/fuel on a budget.

south Asia

If you exclude capital costs... ie a Carnet! Iran, Pakistan and India are absolutely fabulous value in terms bang for your buck/rupee/dollar/euro etc high on the experience factor but low on cost places.

overlanders

I met a couple of European overlanders on their 70s living on their lorry-caravans constanly moving between India, Pakistan and Tibet because they enjoyed the region and could live amply on their pensions. Their only complain was Indian bureocracy which meant having to move in and out of India every so many months, but both acknowledged that they had all the time in the world.
India and Pakistan were for me the best value for money, but I never got as far as Viet nam and other SE Asian republics which look like great value for money.

I was in India/Nepal last year and am still recovering from the experience, so i'll leave it for a while! So any thoughts on, say, central/south America (Chile quite pricey?) or North/Southern Africa?
