Uk to Uganda Overland

Hi there,

I’m considering taking a vehicle from the UK to Uganda, loaded with charity supplies for an orphanage I am in contact with. I will be driving the vehicle to the orphanage and flying home.
I am looking at driving to Turkey then a ferry across to Egypt and down through Sudan, Ethiopia and Kenya.
I think the European/Turkey section will be straightforward enough but need help with the Africa section.
I’m looking for any tips/advice/contacts to start planning this expedition.

Many thanks

Dan

There are no vehicle ferries from Turkey to Egypt.

Your best bet is a ferry from Italy to Israel, then cross into Egypt at Eilat (Taba). The rules for crossing and transiting the Sinai seem to change frequently even in the best of times, though.

Hi,

Have you asked a charity organisation how they are doing that kind of trips? Here on this site is many info about driving that route and borders and everything. I am more thinking about the legal aspects, have you thought about them? You can´t just leave the car there and fly home. Someone, you or the new owner of the car, has to import it into Uganda. For most countries this is very expensive. Same goes probably for the charity stuff you take with you. Is it allowed to import each and every product? Do you have to pay import taxes for those goods or not? And I think you would need a custums document for the goods to get them in transit through all the countries on your route. I doubt you get lots of goods through custums calling them ¨personal travel items¨.

What is your primary objective? If it's to get the supplies to Uganda, then putting to one side for the moment the questions around carrying stuff through the countries involved and finally importing materials and vehicle legally into Uganda, a key question is whether you really want to travel through Egypt? Some travellers are by-passing Egypt because of the difficulties/costs of a carnet/TIP and they're shipping into Port Sudan. However if your primary intent is to see these countries, with a secondary objective of taking supplies to Uganda then it's worth spending the time in Egypt on the way,
