Touring on a Snowmobile???

Hey. Has anyone out there toured on a snowmobile? I was thinking, after reading a thread lower down about touring buggys, where abouts you could explore? Canada, Northern Russia, The Polar Regions???

I suppose you could buy and ship, or hire, and set off into the wilderness just the same as on a motorcycle or 4X4, and a snowmobile isnt that much different from a motorbike.

Any thoughts? I suppose I will have to do it now I brought it up....:mchappy:

snowmobile touring

Snowmobiles would be really unique if you rode thru tropical regions
Seriously though , it is not quite as simple as you may think. You cannot just saddle up and head out to wherever. In Ontario the northern regions are most suited for snowmobiles in winter , but the machines are not permitted on major roads and if you wish to use the established trails systems you have to pay a fee to to the snowmobile federation which set up the trail system and looks after them. Then there is the question of hotels which are often geared for the recreational snowmobilers, may need to plan and reserve if you do not want to freeze to death stuck out in the bush.
You cannot just ride coast to coast the way you can on a bike in summer on public roads.
There are lots of people who do this but it costs much. To get the bug out of your system you could book a stay at one of the snow resorts up north which can rent you a snowmobile for X days, look after the details.
I suspect similar limitations apply in >Scandinavia and the Alpine resorts which probably rent snowmobiles.

France is a non, non.

I'm fairly certain that France has pretty much banned recreational snowmobiles, the only people allowed them being park employees etc.

Tracked quads are still allowed though.

cool

nice one there ilesmark, although I think that particular vehicle is more suited to a military invasion! could be nice and snug though.

shame about the bannage in france, although a tracked quad seems very james bond :thumbup1:

Alex, you may well be right about the situation in France. In our ski resort (Alpe D"Huez) snowmobiles are used all the time in the winter for piste security, transport of injured skiers etc and there are a couple of companies who offer snowmobile daytrips etc but in 10 years I've never seen one in private use
