Spare tire for big motorcycle
 

Hi there
I just prepare my trip from Thailand to Germany and then back. I'm just asking me if it is reasonable to take some spare tire for my motorcycle. I will, countries like Myanmar, India, Pakistan, Iran, Turkey... What is your opinion?

In Turkey you will find tires the size you need, maybe also the brand you want.

Depending on your tire size you maybe will find something in India, Pakistan, Iran, but you cant count on that.

So calculate the distance you are gonna ride until Turkey. Maybe put new good quality tires on before you leave and you can make it all the way to Turkey. If in doubt, carry a set and put it on halfway to Istanbul, or when you dont want to carry it anymore.

I carried a spare tyre from the UK to Malaysia and finally fitted it because I got fed up with carrying it, with the steady pace of travel in most Asian countries they do last a long time. Big bikes are becoming more popular in India and with a little planning I expect you could find one there but if you had started with a new one in Thailand probably won't need one by then.

Thank you for your replies, that is also what I'm thinking but like to be confirmed by other travelers. I don't scare that I need a new tire, I scare only if my tire is so damage that I need a new one. Some years before I have a problem like that in Iceland, there was impossible to find a tire in the dimension what I needed.

The problem associated with worrying about punctures is that you would probably need to carry two tires, since the front and back tires are typically different sizes.

What I carry (for my Honda PanEuropean) is a little kit called a Stop & Go. It's quite small and compact and doesn't take up much space in the panniers. Costs about $65 USD, but in my opinion, it's worth the price. It's well made.

This kit is sufficient to plug a hole and re-inflate the tire at the side of the road. That should be enough to get you to somewhere that you can find a tire repair shop that can dismount the tire and fit a patch on the inside of the tire (presuming they can't source a replacement tire for you).

I've used my kit once, on a surprisingly large puncture (a big nail, about 6 mm diameter), and it worked on that - got me the 700 km distance to home, where I had the tire replaced.

Stop & Go type mushroom plugs are usually good for the life of the tyre. The lawyers blurb on the packet is just *rs* covering. Once the tyre starts to wear the plug self vulcanises into the tyre rubber and you can't even see it. I did 8000 miles with one fitted.

You will also find that in places the legal profession are yet to fully terrorise they will fit internal plugs. Puncture = New tyre only applies in London unless you do properly wreck one.
