Rally Screens

Hello folks,

Does anyone have pictures of rally screens? I'm thinking, rather than make a clear screen out of polycarbonate, I might make a sort of Dakar style screen out of aluminium. You never actually look through a screen anyway, only over the top of it. (At least on the relatively small screens people have on dual sports).

Any reasons why I shouldn't do this?

Matt

It depends on the size, the last thing you would like to make is a giljotin...

Yes, good point! I was wondering about this. I was thinking I'd do a little fold or even roll at the top of the screen to stop it being quite so much of a blade!

I've noticed that the screens used on rally bikes are not just steep, they actually have a little lip at the top which points forwards. I would have thought this would cause serious turbulence in the slipstream?
Also, I've never seen this on a production bike, what's it's purpose?

Matt :)

Quite a few has the lip but it’s often smaller then it is on the rallybikes. It’s meant to direct the air to above your head.

You can also buy a lip from Touratech that fits most screens, or make one yourself which is both prettier and cheaper. Don’t expect miracles, but I like it.

I would suggest not to make it out of aluminium though, I reckon that it will need to be relatively thick/stiff not to vibrate badly, thus you will need think heavy aluminium sheet (hard to bend smooth at very least) or else it will be very angular.

I would go with fibreglass. it will be an easy case of making the mold from chicken wire (or you can pay for the moding mesh) or cardboard or other plyable stuff untill you get the shap you want.. then it it is just a matter of glassing it up.. (fibreglass is very forgiving and although it does need more post production sanding. it very easy to work with. and fix)

I bet FG turns out to be lighter and if (god forbid) you do come acropper and chest it, it will flex and brake. Ali will not be as forgiving to your body.
