Purchase Factory Direct

This subject relates to a subject I've posted in the Bike - Technical department and deals with eirther/or Triumph/F650GSD. Cutting to the chase, what I want to do is Purchase the bike directly from the Manufacturer in country of origin then travel over Europe, North Africa and North America before returning (with bike) to Western Australia. So, I guess my question/s is/are has anyone done this before and was it a nightmare when dealing with various govenment departments.

Nice idea,

Unfortunately no factory will even talk to you. You MUST buy from a dealer, but it can be wherever you like. (BMW used to do a "European delivery" option but it got to be too much aggro and they dropped it years ago. Nobody else has done it for a very long time, like 1950's.

You will need to check out Australias regulations re duty and requirements to pass the vehicle standards.

When I emigrated to Australia I had no problem, because I had owned the bike for 5 years. But it still had to pass an engineers test to ensure that it was road legal in Oz. Only required changed headlight and an Aussie certification plate attached to the frame.

That was about Aus$150 in 1990 if I remember right.

Generally countries want you to pay local duties and taxes and importation fees etc if you haven't owned the bike for a reasonable period of time. And a year isn't long enough.

Check out the Aussie motor vehicle people for more definitive information as well as customs.

Thanks Grant for your input, I can now put a "tick-in-the-box" regarding that issue. I now will purchase the bike here in Oz.
