Oil in checked luggage
Hi all,
The bike was crated up this morning and I had to remove my WD40 and some spare oil. Anyone know if I'm going to have problems sticking these in my luggage when I fly (UK to Canada)? The CAA seem not to like "flammable" aerosols, so I'm assuming WD40 = bad. Cheers, Fraser. |

If you're going to Canada though, won't you be able to buy oil and WD40 when you get there? I've never been to Canada but I've seen it on the TV. I think you'll get it there OK ;) |

Of course, you might get away with checking a small aerosol can if they don't e-ray your bag....but then again, it might spontaneously decompress in the unpressurized hold, spewing WD40 all over everything. Or they might x-ray your bag, see the can, open everything up and mess around with all your stuff in the process of confiscating the WD40, then fail to repack properly and/or steal stuff (yes, stuff does get lost or stolen this way). Or they might merely stop you and search you and your baggage on arrival, which is approximately the last thing you're in the mood for after a long flight with inadequate legroom. All this to save a couple of Canadian dollars and a trip to Wal-Mart after you arrive. I admit that I was puzzled that I could ship my bike with a quarter tank of fuel and a full crankcase, but was not allowed a liter of 10w-40 in my panniers....but it never occurred to me to try and get away with putting it in my checked baggage. Safe journeys! Mark |
Why bother ?
We have wd40 and oil over here . Some areas of Canada are quite civilised you know . It'll be cheaper to buy it here anyway . We don't have coloured toilet paper though , I've always wondered why . So you might want to bring some of that . |
Thanks for the replies. I should have clarified that the oil was for my Scottoiler, which I figured would be harder to come by in North America (it isn't unknown for me to be wrong :) ).
Cheers, Fraser. |
It might indeed be hard to get Scottoil here , but you could always use gear oil , chainsaw bar oil or a mixture of the two .
Have a good trip ! |
Go to the airline website and it will list all the stuff you can and can't take and what you can take you have to put in a clear plastic bag so they can see what it is.
Scotoil looks very much like some sun tan oils :Beach: but you won't get away with saying your WD40 is hair spray. Cheers Ian:thumbup1: |
