No Foreign Address? How to register a new bike?
 

Hey guys. I've recently been struggling with the relaities of flying out somewhere, buying a bike, and going on a long tour. Yet every-time I make some headway I am met with the same problem...

... No address to register the vehicle? No matter where I go in the world I must surely register the vehicle somewhere. Where will the ownership documents be sent?

Example: I fly out to Poland/Canada/Australia/Wherever to buy a bike. Used or New, doesn't seem to matter. Once I get there I sign the ownership papers and have to put my name and address so that the new documents sent out with me named as the new owner.

But I have no address! I have no contacts/friends/families in these countries.

Is it as simple as registering the vehicle to the nearest MailBoxes Store/ P.O Box?

Anyone done this before? How did they get around it?

On our around the world trip we met serveral people who bought the bike in the US and where not from there. They registered the bike with either the address of friends or the dealer´s. Once registered and tax paid, nobody seems to care about you. There´s no paperwork being sent to the address in later years from my understanding. But locals might know better.

In Germany this would not work. We have a totally different system. But that´s another story.

How to find somebody, who "lents" you his/her address? Ask here in the forum. But not in this subforum, but in the relevant regional one.

In India and Nepal it´s possible, too. But only in a "semi-legal" way. Many use this method. But you can´t leave these two countries with your bike.

In Australia it´s possible, too. German friends just bought a 4x4 down there. If you are interested, I can give you their contact data. So you can ask them directly how it was done.

The requirements and procedures will vary from country to country.

In Spain, for example, you need to have a foreigners' tax registration and own property. Renting a place isn't enough.

Permanent or holiday home address is the normal requirement throughout Europe. Strangely enough the U.K. doesn't seems to require as much information. The DVLA ( Driving and Vehicle Licence Agency) only needs to know a permanent address where you can be contacted, so a friends address could be O.K. Where you might have problems is insurance, because insurance companies want to know everything, especially if you're trying to insure a bike with an overseas driving licence and no permanent addy. Many refuse. There are people who can help in Europe with sell and buy back schemes, even for new bikes. Here in France I would recommend you contact Laurent Dozias at Ride-in-Tours ( Voyagiste à moto & location moto et scooter) who does exactly this sort of thing. HU member Wheatwacker in Eire is also very helpful.

Bought two Africa Twins in France. In 2014 and 2016. I am from Montreal, Canada. All I needed is a friend's address and he signed a paper that tells he was hosting me. Then went to the prefecture, showed my Canadian passport, paid the registration fee. Period.
