Map Storage on a 660 tenere

Hi guys. Bit of a silly question but im am after somewhere to place a map on my XT660Z Tenere tank.
Iv been looking at the Touratech tank bags with the map holder on the top but im not to sure if I really want a tank bag just so I can keep a map there.:rolleyes2:

Does anyone have any ideas as to what, where and how I can fix a map to the tank and be waterproof at the same time.

I don't mind buying a tank bag if needs be, but I have a top box on at all times so the storage isn't really needed :mchappy:

I've never owned a tank bag, and would rather carry any weight elsewhere. I use one of these: Crossbar Map Case :: Aerostich/RiderWearHouse Motorcycle Jackets, Suits, Clothing, & Gear. Works surprisingly well although it looks a bit goofy--I can read maps while riding, can unbuckle and flip it over without stopping, and can cram a bunch of folded maps inside for days when I need both city and larger-scaled maps. It is probably the only piece of bike gear I've ever owned which was really and truly 100% waterproof (in addition to indestructible).

The buckles are an odd size, so buy an extra set right away to switch between bikes.

Hope that's helpful.

Mark

Thanks Mark.

Just what I was looking for! This saves me from buying a rather expensive tank bag for holding a few maps.

Assuming you mean the current model, I use a Kriega Tank Harness with a normal hiking map holder strapped to it.

The map holder is roughly square, but folds in half and secures with velcro to the shape shown. This photo is from the 2010 HUMM, I had the checkpoint instructions on the 'outside' of the fold, then the appropriate bit of the map on the inside. Asking for trouble trying to read while moving, but with the velcro easy to stop, unfold, have a look, then fold up and set off again.

Hi dash.
This seems like a very good idea as the other option that markharf gave me is far far far to expensive. They wated nearly $45 in shipping (although ideal!)
I have the same model xt as you. do you think i would be able to strap a ortlieb waterproof map holder the the Kreiga tank harness?? I really do want my option to be waterproof.

Thanks. Lozbier

I would think so.

The map holder in the picture is waterproof - the yellow bit is a roll-top secured by velcro. It's one of these...

Outdoor Designs Meridian Map Case | Cotswold Outdoor

There's extra velcro on the corners to keep it folded in half.

It's quite hard to explain how I attached it, given that my bike is currently in James Cargo's warehouse in Manchester, but I'll try.

There's a webbing strap at the opening end of the map holder to hang it round your neck if you want to look like an idiot while out walking. I lined the opening side of the map case up with one side of the tank harness, then ran the strap across the harness through both webbing ladders, then up and over the top of the unfolded map holder, and back through both webbing ladders at the other side before fastening into the buckle.

When you fold the map holder in half, the strap is inside the fold, so it's not going to go anywhere, and the holder sits within the width of the tank harness.

Still works if you want to actually carry a Kriega US- pack on the tank harness as well...
