info re travelling in norway
 

I am arranging a trip in norway for may/june 2004, 3 bikes 2 up from bergen to hammerfest and nordkapp then return in 10 days.I would appreciate any info on time required to cover distances due to the nature of the roads,speed limits,weather and of course ferries etc.Is it possible to travel one way then load the bike on a train to come back from the north in quick time.(limit for journey from uk & return is 14 days max).I have seen grant and susans write up but could use a little more info if possible. ps any norwegian bikers out there want to meet up on our journey and show us around your home town please get in touch.thanks

I can't give you ridning times on a bike, as we did it with a Land Rover and thus could drive further per day without getting a sore butt! We used 10 days for Oslo-Northcape-Oslo (north via sweden).

I can tell you that the main roads are pretty much all good tarmac, and speed limits are usually 80 km/h.

The train doesn't go farther north than Bodø, and to take the train to/from Bergan, you have to go via Oslo... Look at www.nsb.no for train info.

I'd say the best part of the trip up north was Lofoten. I would drive extra hard to "save up" a few days exploring the lofoten islands. Have a look at our website: www.dunia.no under the Norway part of our "diary".

We unfortunatly didn't go on the "Atlanter havs veien" (Atlantic sea road) from Bodø to Trondheim, because of too little time, and me being sick as a dog, but this is supposed to be one of the most beautiful roads in Norway.

How enjoyable it is up north depends of course on the weather. The weather can be great and it can then change to crap in 5 minutes...
June is good in terms of the midnightsun. In fact, You might find yourself doing things and then suddenly noticing that it's 0300 in the morning while you thought it was maybe about 2200 in the evening!

Very good, Norway's a lot more interesting than Sweden IMHO, especially the north. I did 5000 miles in a fortnight, have a look at the route on my website. Didn't do that much ferry hopping thought, tended to ride round the fjords rather than cross them. Instead of a train, there is always the coatal boat, the Hurtigrute.

Hi. I did the same tour last summer on my Ktm Adventure. Great tripp!! Bring colthes for cold weather, and rain! Its great posebilety for that..
Take the ferry from Bodø to Moskenes (tipp of Lofoten) on your way north. Its a butifull tripp if the weather is good. Mail me questoins if there is anything I can help whit.
