Help needed to plan bike trip Peru to Oregon (USA)
Hi All, For a very long time I have been dreaming of doing a bike trip from Peru up through Central America to Oregon with my 28yo son around August/September 2018 (we are both experienced riders (Australian conditions)). However we are on a budget and unfortunately can only be away for those months.
The planning of this proposed trip is proving very daunting as we have never toured outside of Australia before. I am keen to hear any suggestions, advice, tips, contacts etc as well as advice on the possibility of purchasing second hand bikes in Peru and then selling them in USA - Where and how to start the process without being overwhelmed. Any help would be greatly appreciated :helpsmilie: |
Peru to Oregon
Hi There
I am Kiwi and have traveled so far from Santiago to Costa Rica. So i can not tell you much about everything north of Costa Rica. We will continue our travels north in April. However if you are keen we could probably best Skype sometime. I tell you what i know. You can best write to my email franzmorgenthaler@gmail.com Franz |
The range of applicable "suggestions, advice, tips, contacts etc " is so vast that it's difficult to even begin. Nonetheless.....
First of all, just start reading--here, on ADVrider.com, and in the usual guidebooks (mebbe begin with Chris Scott (http://https://adventure-motorcycling.com), but basically you could start almost anywhere, including Lonely Planet, Bradt, or Rough Guides). Second, you can't sell a Peru-purchased bike in the USA to anyone who intends to use it on roads. It cannot be registered or insured. Best think of another plan. Third, you don't have enough time to make the trip you're planning in any sort of reasonable manner, and racing along at high speed is not only frustrating, but it tends to be expensive as well. Far better to choose either South America or North; the dividing line is the Darien Gap, which alone would wreak havoc with your budget and schedule. Fourth, using the search function on this site will help you get a sense of what's required to buy and sell bikes. Hope that's helpful. Mark |
Hi,
Don’t know how your planning is going, I’ve been living in Colombia for three years and know a bit of Peru, Paraguay, Panama , México and a lot of Colombia. Agree with Mark about the short time you have for such a long way. Let me know if I can help with your trip in Colombia. Alfonso Enviado desde mi iPad utilizando Tapatalk |
