german registered bike needs imported to uk

I have bought a bike in Paris its german registered, I need to get it back to the uk. Is there an easy way to temporarily register the bike so i could ride it back, or has anyone imported a bike and know of an easy way to get it back. Last resort is to hire a van and bring it back that way alternativly is there anyone travelling that way with a van could carry it back to the uk in the next month any help or advice very much appreciated. The current owner has no insurance valid until may. I canot get insurance to ride it on the road unless it has registration plates the german plates/insurance are not currently valid and UK plates cant be fitted till its imported and re registered with DVLA.

Try using ebikeinsurance online. I was able to insure a bike before it was registered by just entering the frame number instead of a registration number.
Anyway I thought you werent' going to buy any more bikes!

Riding the bike without current rego is illegal. Since the bike isn't registered in France you can't get export rego there.

IF the bike has been registered in Germany within the last 18 months AND IF the HU (technical inspection, TUeV) is still valid you can get German export plates with insurance in Germany. However, given that you are in Paris this will make it hardly worthwhile.

Thanks for the reply - I new this was going to be complicated a van seems the only way - but adds a lot to the cost of buying the bike.
Harleyrider I can get the bike insured on the frame number as well on my insurance but as I have no registration - as beddhist says it can not be ridden to the uk.
As for not buying any more bikes well ! (that yorkshire beer makes me talk more poop than usual)
actually I am selling the KTM so i will only have one bike - just this time it will be a bmw - so I can experience breaking down.
After years of unreliable Italian bike ownership and several poorly BMWs the KTM is proving just too reliable !!. I need something to fix .

I suppose what I was getting at was:-
If you can use the frame number to register a bike via the internet, it would probably also let you use the German Registration No as well.
You would then have a proper insurance certificate with the bike reg. Presumably you would also be in possession of whatever passes for a V5 in Germany, in the previous owners name and a receipt to say you'd bought it (or a letter authorizing you to ride his bike).
You haven't told any lies, the insurance company have accepted your money and issued a cover note.
I doubt you'd have any problems if your paperwork was checked en-route in either France or UK, but that's unlikely. Bit of a risk if you have an accident and I guess you're then in unknown territory.
I'd risk it. If it was my best option to get the bike home.
Trouble is you've asked the question and now you know it's technically wrong. I'd have made my own choice without asking and therefore ridden in blissful ignorance.

I'd hardly call it reliable if it needs a £600 replacement clutch every 24,000 miles or so;-)
Hope you get the new one home anyway, one way or the other. If you haven't solved it in the next few weeks there's a possibility I'll be over there with a trailer soon.

No online rego in Germany. Somebody must present the ownership paper, an insurance cover card, ID card (and, if registering on somebody else's behalf, the owner's ID and authorisation) in person at the competent rego office, i.e. where the owner lives. As you don't live in Germany it would have to be registered in somebody else's name or you have to get export plates. They CAN demand to see the vehicle and sometimes they do.

There is also the option of using temporary plates, but again, it has to be done by a resident, who would have to send you the plates by post or courier.

Again, I don't think it's worth the trouble.

Thanks gentlemen, I now have this sorted and am using the van. Reason I can not ridethe bike back on german plates with my own insurance is simple -to transfer the ownership the seller has had to hand in his plates to get the transfer of ownership documents, The only other way was to go to germany get temp plates and insurance then ride back but as the bikes in Paris this is a long way round of doing it - its worked out almost as cheap in the van. So I am sorted. Cheers.
