French!
Am going to Morocco this december, with a friend of mine (Dave for those who met us at the Travellers meet). Anyhow, I speak French to a reasonably level, but my french doesn't extend much into bike parts/etc. So does anybody have a detailed list of bike parts in French ? I'm thinking things like piston rings, fuses etc.etc.

See http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/tech/mcglossary.php for a start on a multi-lingual translation. If you come up with additions let me know.

CS's Sahara Overland has got a French technical glossary on p506 that might be helpful.
Drop me an email Ive you havent got the book or even better just buy it, it has some interesting itineraries for Maroc (and loads of other stuffr).... |
This could be a really good idea! An on-line parts translation page. All too often we can be lost trying to explain what part we are after for our bikes, especialy if we're English - as our languages tend to be poor - mine is anyway. If you can show the guy the part you want replacing its ok but id you're on the phone or don't have it with you it can be really difficult.
What do people think? |
Uuuh, Chris, ummm, it IS a really good idea - and it's already in progress - just give me some time! See link above in my previous post.
It's going to be connected to a database real soon now, then anyone can add to it! ------------------ Grant Johnson Seek, and ye shall find. ------------------------ One world, Two wheels. www.HorizonsUnlimited.com [This message has been edited by Grant Johnson (edited 06 August 2002).] |
(well Grant and Susan, each and every time I surf a bit around on your site, I find another item which I haven't seen before and is VERY VERY interesting and useful. And each and every time I pass the site on to someone, they come back to me telling how EXCELLENT it indeed is. What a GOOD idea to have this technical translation page !!!)
Here is my bit of contribution to the tech translation bit - unfortunately not in "webable" form : it's the dictionary I have been using for a few years. The German/English/French dictionary “Fachwörterbuch der Zweiradtechnik/Two-Wheeler Technical Dictionary/Dictionnaire technique du deux-roues” by Béatrice Couzereau, edited by BVA (Bielefeld Verlagsanstalt) - ISBN 3-87073-054-4. I found it some years ago at Götz, a German motorbike accesory dealer, but they changed goods (and names, and I couldn't find it in their present catalogue at http://www.mandp.de/ But with the ISBN number you should be able to trace it elsewhere - IF there are still some left since 1990.
