Extended stay, how long does the carnet allow you to stay in one country ?
Hi all,
so the bad news is, I'm broke... I knew this would happen eventually, but I did not expect it to be after just ten months. I guess six months in Australia were a bit underevaluated, budgetwise... So, my question, I will go back to OZ to work for a year, but leave my Troopy in Thailand at a friend of a friend of a friend's place. How long does the carnet really let the vehicle stay, provided the carnet gets extended for another 12 months (it expires in Jul 2013) ? When I pick up the vehicle early 2014, how much problem you reckon I will face when the car has been in Thailand for over a year ? Wing it ?:confused1: Ta, Boags. |
Hi again Boags,
I think the carenet is not the problem, the problem is that you are only alowed to leave your car for 6 month in Thialand and afterwards you would have to pay the full import tax for it, which can be Xtream expensive. But thats my thought only, or what I heared from people there. Till now they did every 6 month an owner change, but this doesnt work as well anymore because even Thailand has now a computerized Import System... You can ask BigTom (contact him in Facebook: Big Toms Ride) he is in Thailand, or meanwhile in Cambodia and left his GS for some time (more then 6 month) in Thailand using a carnet just now... We are 400km North of Perth if you are close lets go for a beer.. we will be around till January or till August in AU and then..... who knows.... cheers Mate... and good luck |
Hi Boags,
If you can find somewhere to store the Troopy l in Malaysia you then should not have a problem, our motorbikes had been there for nearly a year and we never had any trouble when we left. |

me again, I made a mistake, actually I dont know if Tom used the carnet. Thailand is not a Carnet country. Nevertheless we tried to use our Carnet when we crossed from Cambodia because we thought we can stay with it for 6 month but didnt work out... the guy at the boarder filled our Carnet AND the TEMPORARY IMPORT PAPERS (as far as I remember it was the Form T03 and T04) valid for ONE month. We changed that in Phuket to 6 Month. What you maybe could do is store it in Thailand for 6 Month, make sure the papers are valid for 6 Month, after 6 Month go to Cambodia for a week. Sihanoukville is a OK beach for a week. After go back into Thailand for another 6 Month... just maybe, but should work once... cheers Mate ;) |
