Cleaning O-Ring Chains

I've just bought a Daida (or Daido) O-Ring chain and it cautions against cleaing in any volatile or benzine products obviously including gasolene. Would gasolene really damage the O-Rings or is this just the manufacturer covering its back. I probably won't have the luxury to wash my chain in exotic fluids in outback Mongolia.

And I wondered if O-Ring chains can be run dry as I know some chains can in very dusty/ dirty conditions. Would the rubber seals perish with the friction?
