There are various stories here on the Hubb from people who have gone through countries like Iran in the past without using a carnet. But to be honest I think you are looking for a lot of hassle and possible dissapointment if the Customs person at the norder is having a bad day and just says no!! Instead of one hour at the border with the carnet.

As for Australia, yes you do need a carnet. If you are not a resident and haven't got prior permission before shipping the bike then it won't go past customs. If by some chance you did get thet far then you would have to pay the GST (customs would decide how much the bike is worth, not you) then an engineers report to get it registered and then the rego etc.

My advice (for what it's worth) Just accept the fact that a carnet is another (albeit costly) expence for the trip. Sorry if that's not what you wanted to hear.

The alternative to using a carnet?

Import it into every country ...
For Iran I believe that is 400% the value of the vehicle ...

For Australia .. you will probably have to fit it with various things .. like a metric speedo. And get all the paperwork in order before you arrive.

Oh .. and you probably won't get the import fees back ...

You do the research... it will take some days .. and eventually you'll realize it is not worth it ... the carnet is cheaper and easier.

Also have you ever herd of anybody getting a fake carnet made up ? Maby you can get one in Thailand before heading to India .. ?

Ask at the relevant country embassy. I think Iran is the most expensive from a quick scan of carnet costs.

Iran you can get through without a carnet, there are details on this site.

Pakistan you can transit without a carnet, but...

India, no chance. I do not know of anyone who has imported a vehicle to India, but Indan bureacracy is some of the worst in the world, I imagine it would involve weeks, or even months of tedious hair pulling and running around.

Getting a carnet from the ADAC should be easy if your bike is registered in Ireland. If it's in the UK you have to deal with the useless shysters that are RAC Carnets.

I used a carnet to get into both of these countries, so I do not really know... but it is my understanding, that Iran will NOT be easy to get into without it. And Pakistan, I have not heard of one single person, who has been allowed to ride/drive their vehicles there, unless they were brought in using the carnet. Somebody was, as you say, transiting their bike on trains or something, but sounded very laborous, and not fun.. (and naturally they did not get in without a big, big hassle at the border.)

And I´d expect to be stuck for days or weeks at the Indian border, if you do not have the carnet, and want to take your bike there. Also Indonesia customs seemed to give a hard time for many travellers, I´d hate to try going there without it. Oz, I´m not sure, as they did not require it as mandatory back in 2008, when I went there, but as I had the carnet, I used it for temp import.

To the OP: Faking official documents is not something I´d advice anyone to do. First think about, how nice and welcoming the local jails might look like, and think if you´d want to spend time there wondering, how you´re gonna get your impounded vehicle back......
