After a crash, what now?
 

hi,

I was riding from Europe to Asia but had a crash in Turkey.
Seems that my Africa Twin is not worth repairing anymore there the frame is bended...

-the insurance is taking a long time to figure this out.
where can i find information about insurance in foreign country? I don't agree on how they treath my case at all, and it is a Belgium insurance (I am from belgium).

everyone says me to continue to travel and go for my goal, India. But I think the journey itself is more important then the destination. I want to ride a bike, travel by bike, be an adventure rider :) I don't want to be in India in Particular...
The option to buy a new bike here in Turkey implicates some things:

-thats its more expensive in turkey
-I don't even know it that is possible, to buy a bike in Turkey and register it in Belgium. I already have a license plate tough...
-I will have less money to ride where I wanted to ride (India but first also Georgia Armenia Turkmenistan tadjikistan maybe Kazachstan etc...)

For the moment I m stuck here in Turkey waiting a little bit for my insurance.
What shoud I do?
I m thinking of going back to belgium and start working again to get some money and a new bike, and then to start again, but i ll have to wait for almost a year again
If someone can give me some Ideas on how to continue travelling from Turkey now on...
I woud be glad to!

edit: good to know, I didn't had a scratch from the accident!!! yes, one little scratch actually, but thats all. I am medicaly 100% ok :) well thats one thing at least

Sorry to hear of your crash, glad you are OK.

Easiest would be to go back to Belgium, buy the same bike, transfer what you can from your existing bike and start again, surely?

Raf..You can't leave Turkey without bike as its registered to your passport. So please learn first what to do before leaving. May be you need to get some reports that your bike cant be recovered.

i know, I need it to take it to the customs. then I can leave.

it woud be another story if i could or would to take the bike with me, I agree.

But since the inscurance well declare a totall loss, i won't have rights on the bike anymore. They will just give me the value of the bike...

Sorry to hear about your accident and good to hear that you are unharmed but there will be a lot to sort out such as the carnet if you wish to continue on another or a rebuilt bike as it will only be valid for the vin number on that frame.

Sorry to hear about your bad luck. Good to know that you are okay.

It might be a good idea to get in touch with Dave Nunns (a HUBB member), as almost exactly the same thing happened to him in eastern Turkey during May this year.

Dave got it all sorted and then carried on with a different plan.

Thats the 3 rd.accident after 2 GB. ones this year...
A few questions to sort it out..
1-where is the bike now.
2-did you get the accident report by local traffic police signed by you also..
3-did you get the written permission by nearest customs office with that report saying that you can leave the country without your vehicle.

You cant buy a vehicle on your name here..there are 2 xt available may be some more in bulgaria..you can travel rtw.with letter of attorney you can get in bulgaria.(in English and farsi must if you will enter Iran)

The bike is in Ankara now and can stay there in a garage where i did repairs just before the accident (grmbll).
I have the police report and my insurance have it also. The discussion is until I have no declaration of my insurance that the bike is total loss, I am not eager to take it to the customs and forget about it. In fact, I want to keep it and see if maybe I can transport it maybe back to belgium and repair it there with another Africa Twin wreck i already have in mind.

I wanted to wait for the decision of the insurance, how much they will repay me for the bike ,there the accident is not caused by me.
in matter of fact, it is a crossroad with 2 equal roads, and there was a car coming from the left. I had priority and in Belgium I woud have repaid my bike 100%. Now it seems I have 25% fault in this accident because of 'not paying attention' ?!
I want to object this!
And even, I have no idea how much they will value my bike...
lots of questions about the insurance, that seem not be aware that I am in a forgein country that I even cannot leave untill this is over...

In Ankara, there is official bmw service and only the staff of your turkey insurance company from ankara can give a total loss report with advices of this company or owner of the workshop where your bike is kept..

Turkish insurance company must be informed about the accident and where it is kept now so that they can come and check..
There must be a file on your name opened by the ins. company if already been informed.If you are not the guilty one, a copy of the other sides' insurance policy will be needed..Generally final report is done within 4-5 days after the control date..

You can contact Mr.Azmi Gn.mngr. and Mr.Can in the technical dept..Language will be nop. there.Also they have a friendly company in ankara which does airfreight from ankara and all the paperwork..

Has the bike been taken to several GOOD workshops and been looked at ? is there any way the bent sections of the frame can be cut out and replaced?

I spent quite a bit of time in Turkey and they are pretty good at fixing things that are "a write off"

The insurance process may take several weeks, so use the time to see if the bike can be fixed. It may not get fixed to a European standard, but it may be good enough to continue your journey.

Havent seen the bike i would recomend you to repair it and ride on. In those countrys nobody will care about a bend frame and there is no road worthy test so as long as the engine is running get it weldet somehow (people in third world countrys are very good in repairing things) and continue.
