Visa's for Central and South America

I am planning a trip from the USA through Central and South America. I see lots written about Carnets and dodgy borders etc. but nothing about Visa's. I am a British Passport holder, can anyone confirm if visa's are required for any of the Country in the region I will travel or is it a matter of getting what is needed at each indiviual border?

We are also traveling through Central America, El Salvador now requires a Visa, you can obtain one from one of their consolates. We are currently getting ours in Miami, FL for our trip in February 2002.

Sorry, I did not see the right place to respond. To our knowledge no other country in Central America requires any paper work that can not be obtained at the border. We are making sure we comply with El Salvadors new policy by getting a Visa in the US.

Good luck on your travels.
